LAFAYETTE, La. – Led by Laurenz Schiergen and Cooper Schultz, the Kansas State men's golf team is in fourth place after two rounds of play at the Louisiana Classics on Monday, held at the par-72, 6,898-yard Oakbourne Country Club.
The Cats began the event with a 4-under par 284 opening round before concluding the day with an even better 6-under par 282 second round to bring their 36-hole total to 8-under par 568.
"It was an up and down day, but overall we are in a good position," head coach Grant Robbins. "Cooper and Laurenz both put up two really solid rounds, and Will (Hopkins) did a great job bouncing back in round two. I didn't think we were as sharp as we usually are tee to green, but we did a great job grinding it out and staying in it."
Schiergen and Schultz pace the Wildcats on the leaderboard as they are tied for 12th place at 4-under par 140.
Schiergen, a freshman who is making his third career scoring lineup appearance, played his way into the top-15 behind a pair of 2-under par 70 rounds. His first round was highlighted by an eagle on No. 7, and he picked up four birdies in the second round. Schiergen will be on the hunt for his first career top-10 finish when he tees off in the final round on Tuesday.
Schultz, a redshirt freshman who's in his spring debut, recorded an impressive 3-under par 69 first round and a 1-under par 71 second round to put himself in position for his second career top-10 finish.
Will Hopkins had quite the turnaround in day one after opening with a 3-over par 75 first round. The senior rallied to card a 3-under par 69 second round and move into a tie for 25th place at an even-par 144.
Tim Tillmanns, a junior, is in a tie for 48th place at 4-over par 148 after tallying back-to-back 2-over par 74 rounds.
Luke O'Neill, a sophomore who made headlines after an individual championship last week at the Colleton River Collegiate, is in a tie for 75th place at 7-over par 151 after a tough 8-over par 80 second round. O'Neill began the event with a 1-under par 71 first round and will hope to return to that level of play to rise up the leaderboard in the final round.
No. 21 Texas A&M had a dominant 36 holes and holds a 13-stroke lead in first place at 34-under par 542. The Aggies are led by Sam Bennett, who is atop the individual leaderboard at 12-under par 132 with a three-shot lead over Diego Prone from North Texas.
Kansas State will hope to clinch its fourth straight top-five finish and fifth of the season when play concludes Tuesday morning with the final round scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. fixed start from holes 1 and 10.
There's no doubt that the Wildcats are ready to finish strong.
"We're looking forward to tomorrow," Robbins said.
Fans have an exciting opportunity to watch the Cats in action as the third round of the Louisiana Classics will be televised on ESPN+ beginning at 9:15 a.m. Live scoring can also be followed on Golfstat.com.
