TCU Edges No. 56 K-State on Sunday

Mar 20, 2022 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 56 Kansas State women's tennis team dropped their second match of the weekend, as the Wildcats fell 4-2 to Big 12 foe TCU on Sunday (March 20) at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

K-State (6-8, 0-4 Big 12) won the doubles' point, but lost singles' matches at the No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 positions.

The Wildcats started off the day by winning the point in doubles with victories at the No. 1 and 2 positions.

"I thought we put ourselves in a great position after doubles," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "It has been a few matches since we've entered singles with a lead. Unfortunately, we have up two points way too quickly in singles and we gave TCU confidence to get back in the match. Just lacking a sense of urgency in a few of our spots today."

Seniors Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares closed out their set 6-1 over TCU's Aleksa Cveticanin and Alisa Sloveva at the number one spot. Shortly following were freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Ioana Gheorghita at the number two position. The Wildcats defeated Isabel Pascual and Mercedes Aristegui 6-1.

Freshman Dinara Alloyarova and sophomore Manami Ukita were tied 4-4 against Stevie Kennedy and Jade Otway, but K-State already claimed the doubles point and the match went unfinished.

Ukita had the only singles point for the Wildcats as she defeated Addy Guevara 6-4, 6-2. This was Ukita's first singles match of the spring season.

TCU took control for the remainder of the match.

At the number one spot, Job put up a fight against Soloveva, but couldn't hold on. The match went to three, but it was Soloveva, who captured the win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Also going to three sets were Gheorghita and Pascual on court four. Pascual dropped set one 6-3, but came back to clinch a singles' point 6-2, 6-4.

TCU's Kennedy was too much for Alloyarova on court five and won the match 6-1, 6-3.

At the number three spot, Otway defeated Dekkers 6-4, 6-2.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday (March 26) to play No. 37 Tulsa and Sunday (March 27) to take on Wichita State. Both matches will be outside at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium with both matches beginning at 12 p.m.
