No. 56 Wildcats Continue Play Against No. 41 Tulsa and Wichita State

Mar 24, 2022 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 56 Kansas State women's tennis team will take a break from conference play and continue its homestand with two matches at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium, facing 41st-ranked Tulsa on Saturday (March 26) before finishing the weekend against Wichita State on Sunday (March 27).

Saturday's match with the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes is slated for at 12 p.m. start while the second match of the weekend against the Shockers of Wichita State is Sunday at 12 p.m.

"I hope we can close out our nonconference portion on a high note," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "Both of these programs have a history of doing well. Neither match will be easy. If we can fight harder late into our singles matches, then I believe we can pick up two wins on the weekend."

K-State (6-8, 0-4 Big 12) dropped its last two matches against Big 12 foes No. 34 Texas Tech (4-2) and TCU 4-0).

The Wildcats picked up their first doubles point against TCU since playing the Iowa Hawkeyes on March 4. The senior doubles pair of Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares were first to finish as they took down Aleksa Cveticanin and Alisa Soloveva 6-1. Clinching the doubles point were freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Ioana Gheorghita. The duo defeated Isabel Pascual and Mercedes Aristegui 6-1.

K-State last played the Shockers and Golden Hurricane last year during the 2021 spring season. The Wildcats walked away victorious against Wichita State 4-1 on February 19, but fell to Tulsa 4-3 on March 31.

It was a close match between Tulsa and the Wildcats. The Golden Hurricanes claimed the doubles point, but K-State wasn't giving up.

Linares earned a singles point against Laia Conde Monfort 6-2, 6-3.

The second singles point went to Gheorghita as she was successful against Lian Benedejcic 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Then junior Rosanna Maffei won her first set against Shura Poppe 6-1 before falling in set two 6-4. Maffei's fight wasn't over as she finished out the third and final set 6-1 to claim the third point for K-State.

Conference play will pick up again on Friday (April 1) as the Wildcats take on No. 28 Iowa State, followed by West Virginia on Sunday (April 3). Saturday's match will be at 4 p.m. while Sunday's will take place at 12 p.m., marking the team's final two home matches of the season.
