Freshmen Lead the Way During Day One in Mississippi

WEST POINT, Miss. – Led by two freshmen — Laurenz Schiergen and Nicklaus Mason — the Kansas State men's golf team is in fourth place after day one at the Mossy Oak Invitational, held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Mossy Oak Golf Club.
The event was suspended before the completion of round two due to darkness, but the Wildcats, despite battling some challenging weather throughout the day, are in the midst of a 4-under par second round after opening the day with an even-par 288 first round.
"Overall, I thought we played pretty well today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We got off to a tough start in the rain but settled in and played some really solid golf midway through the first round. The wind kicked up a bit in round two and we let a couple get away on some of the tougher holes coming in, but we are in good shape heading into tomorrow."
Schiergen has been a star so far and leads K-State on the leaderboard in third place at 6-under par throughout 34 holes. He carded seven birdies in a career-best 3-under par 69 first round and is also sitting 3-under par with two holes remaining in his second round.
All eyes will be on the Cologne, Germany product in Tuesday's final round, as he is three strokes off the lead and is in position to battle for his first career championship.
Mason, another young gun who is having a terrific tournament to this point, also carded a career-best 3-under par 69, which has put him in a tie for fourth place. He is currently even par after 15 second-round holes. Mason's second round is highlighted by an eagle on No. 7.
The Kansas product from Shawnee will be searching for his first career top-five finish in a team event when play concludes.
Further down the leaderboard and in a tie for 40th place is senior Will Hopkins. He's 2-under par with four holes remaining in the second round, which moved him up 24 spots after he recorded a 4-over par 76 first round. The veteran leader will have plenty of opportunities left to continue his climb up the standings.
Tim Tillmanns, a junior, is presently tied for 50th place. After carding a 2-over par 74 opening round, he sits 1-over par through 14 holes in the second round.
Luke O'Neill is in a tie for 85th place after a difficult 7-over par 79 first round. The sophomore is at 2-over par with three holes left in the second round.
Vanderbilt, which is 16-under par through 32 holes, currently holds a four-stroke lead over host-school Mississippi State. The Commodores are led by Gordon Sargent, who's in first place at 9-under par.
Schiergen, Mason, and Kansas State are set for an exciting second day when play resumes at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. The 54-hole event will conclude with the final round immediately following the completion of round two. Fans can follow live scoring on Golfstat.com.
