IOWA CITY, Iowa – After 36 holes on Saturday at the Hawkeye Invitational, the Kansas State men's golf team is tied for fifth place at 12-over par 588 on the par-72, 6,886-yard Finkbine Golf Course.
The Wildcats began the event with an even-par 288 first round to rise into second place but fell three spots after carding a 12-over par 300 second round.
"It was a tough day for us but there were some bright spots," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Will (Hopkins) and Laurie (Laurenz Schiergen) really played solid all day. Even though the second round was not what we wanted, the guys showed a lot of fight and made some birdies down the stretch."
K-State is led by Hopkins, a senior, who so far has earned a spot in the top-10 at an even-par 144. He carded a 1-under par 71 and followed it with a 1-over par 73 second round to sit in a tie for eighth place. Hopkins will hope to ensure his second of the season and sixth of his career top-10 during the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
One stroke back and in a tie for 11th place is Schiergen, a freshman, who carded an opening 1-over par 73 round and an even par-72 second round. Schiergen is in position for his third consecutive top-20 finish.
Next on the leaderboard is Tim Tillmanns as he carded a 1-over par 73 opening round and a 4-over par 76 second round to bring his 36-hole total to 5-over par 149 and sit in a tie for 35th place.
At 6-over par 150 and tied for 41st place is Luke O'Neill. The sophomore got off to a hot start with a 1-under par 71 first round but faltered with a 7-over par 79 second round.
Nicklaus Mason is in 76th place at 16-over par 160 after shooting consecutive 8-over par 80 rounds.
Cooper Schultz, who is competing as an individual this weekend, is tied for 66th place at 11-over par 155. He carded a 4-over par 76 first round and a 7-over par 79 second round.
No. 28 Kansas is atop the standings and holds an eight-stroke lead over host-school Iowa thanks to a 8-under par 280 second round.
"We just made way too many big numbers today," Robbins said. "But, it's a 54 hole tournament and I'm confident we will bounce back strong tomorrow."
The Cats will have the opportunity to do just that when play in Iowa City will conclude Sunday morning with the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. via a shotgun start. Fans can follow live scoring on Golfstat.com.
