NORMAN, Okla. - The Kansas State men's golf team is in 11th place after shooting a 14-over par 302 opening round on Monday at the 2022 NCAA Norman Regional, held at the par-72, 7,452-yard Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
"It was a tough day for us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We got off to a pretty poor start and couldn't seem to get anything going. The course is playing very firm and fast, which puts a premium on ball striking, and we struggled some in that regard."
Leading the Wildcats on the 75-man leaderboard is Tim Tillmanns and Nicklaus Mason, who are tied for 39th place at 2-over par 74.
A stroke behind them is Will Hopkins at 3-over par 75 and tied for 45th place. Laurenz Schiergen and Luke O'Neill are tied for 68th place at 7-over par 79.
The No. 1 seed Oklahoma Sooners are currently the leaders in their home clubhouse after recording an 11-under par 277 first round. J.M. Butler of Auburn and Gene Zeigler of South Carolina are tied for first place on the individual leaderboard at 6-under par 66.
Though just 18 holes in, K-State is 20 strokes behind fifth place, which is where the Wildcats will need to climb to advance to the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Golf National Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Grayhawk Golf Club, May 27-June 1.
"There's a lot of golf left, and with the wind forecasted to pick up, a low round tomorrow can go a long way," Robbins said.
The Wildcats will resume play Tuesday morning with tee times beginning their second round at 9:25 a.m. Fans can track live scoring on Golfstat.com.
