K-State Gains Valuable Experience at Women’s Intercollegiate

The team will enter two more tournaments on Monday Oct. 3

The K-State women's tennis team traveled to San Diego, California to compete in the Women's Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday (September 29) and Friday (September 30).
 
In the start of singles play on Thursday, freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska faced two competitors after competing in a play-in match in the round of 64 against USC's Gabrielle Lee. Gruszczynska won in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the round of 32. In her second match of the day, Gruszczynska was defeated by Iowa's Daianne Hayashida, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Senior Rosanna Maffei also started in the round of 64 against North Texas' Jasmine Adams but was defeated in two sets, 6-3, and by match point, 7-5.
 
Freshman Vanesa Suarez and sophomore Florentine Dekkers began play in the round of 32 with Suarez facing UCLA's Vanessa Ong and Dekkers playing Oklahoma State's Alana Wolfberg. Suzarez lost in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, while Dekkers was bested in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
 
Neither doubles team had to compete in the first round instead advancing to the round of 16 on Friday. Suarez and Maffei faced Iowa's Barbora Pokorna and Daianne Hayashida and were defeated 6-3. Host team San Diego's Kailey Evans and Claudia De Las Heras defeated Gruszczynksa and Dekkers, 6-3.
