KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Thanks to the sixth-best team round in school history, the Kansas State women's golf team improved three spots on Tuesday to finish in a tie for seventh place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship held at the par-71, 5,965-yard Cherokee Country Club.

The Wildcats, who had two players under par and another shoot even par during the final round, turned in a 3-under par 281 on Tuesday, their second-best round of the season and the third time this year they collected a top-10 round in school history. It was a 17-shot improvement from Monday's second round, which resulted in a 14-over par 298.

K-State finished with a 54-hole score of 14-over par 866, which ranks ninth in program history and helped the Wildcats – ranked 66th in this week's Golfweek rankings – defeat four higher-ranked teams in host-school and No. 48 Tennessee (ninth), No. 56 Kent State (10th), No. 64 Chattanooga (11th) and No. 29 Kansas (13th).

"Today was a total team effort," first-year head coach Stew Burke said. "The ladies did a great job of sticking to the plan and picked up shots where we knew that we could. We hung on through the tough stretch of holes to ultimately finish with an under-par score. I was really pleased about how the ladies competed. A performance like this in the field of this quality is a big step in the right direction. This was the bounce back we were looking for after yesterday's performance."

Junior transfer Carla Bernat led the charge on Tuesday with a 3-under par 68, equaling her season-low round she put together in the first round of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. She moved 11 spots up the leaderboard to finish in 13th place at even-par 213.

Freshman Alenka Navarro joined Bernat in the top 20 as she tied for 20th place at 2-over par 215. The Mexico City, Mexico, product, who shot even par on Tuesday, registered two rounds of even- or under-par golf on the week to give her four such rounds in her young career.

Haley Vargas also handed in an under-par round at 1-under par 70, moving the senior nine spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 33rd place at 5-over par 218.

Junior Remington Isaac shot 1-over par 72 on Tuesday to give her a final tally of 7-over par 220, tying for 38th place. Senior Napua Glossner finished in 77th place at 29-over par 242.

No. 27 UCF earned a wire-to-wire victory with a score of 17-under par 835, 12 strokes ahead of second-place Ole Miss. The Knights also claimed the individual champion in Molly Smith at 12-under par 201.

Kansas State concludes its fall slate next Friday through Sunday at the White Sands Invitational, held at the Ocean Club in Paradise Island, The Bahamas.
