Oct 28, 2023 | Men's Golf
LOXLEY, Ala. – The Kansas State men's golf team carded a 12-over par 588 on Saturday and is in a tie for fifth place following the first two rounds of the Steelwood Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,032-yard Steelwood Country Club.
Junior Nicklaus Mason led the Wildcats on the day as he is tied for ninth place at 1-under par 143. The Shawnee, Kansas, native carded a 3-over par 75 in the first round but jumped 28 spots up the leaderboard with a 4-under par 65 in the afternoon.
"It was a tough day today overall," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The greens are extremely firm here, and if you are off just a little bit, you are going to pay for it. There were some bright spots today. Luke (O'Neill) and Cooper (Schultz) were really solid in round one, and Nick bounced back with a phenomenal round in the afternoon. We just need to stay disciplined and not try and force things. If we do that and get four solid rounds tomorrow, we will have a chance to make a big move."
Junior JP Roller, who is competing as an individual, is tied with Mason for ninth place. He jumped out with a 3-under par 69 in the first round before a 2-over par 74 in the second round.
Junior Cooper Schultz is also in the top 20 as he enters Sunday's final round in a tie for 16th place at even par 144. Schultz, a product of Andover, Kansas, went 1-under par 71 in the first round and 1-over par 73 over his second 18 holes.
Senior Luke O'Neill is tied for 29th place at 3-over par 147 thanks in part to a 1-under par 71 in the first round. Ben Stoller enters the final round in a tie for 57th place at 10-over par 154, while Alex Lindstrom is tied for 71st at 14-over par 158.
Alabama holds a three-stroke lead entering the final round at 8-under par 568, ahead of Kentucky at 5-under par 571. Chattanooga's John Houk is at 10-under par 134 to hold a one-shot lead on the individual leaderboard.
The final round of the Steelwood Intercollegiate tees off at 7:40 a.m. on Sunday. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
