Seventh-Inning Rally Leads Team Katie’s Way to Sunday Triumph
Nov 05, 2023 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A seventh-inning rally helped drive Team Katie's Way to a 7-6 victory over Team No Stone Unturned to conclude K-State's 2023 fall season Sunday at Tointon Family Stadium.
As part of the team's 19 Ways program, K-State baseball partnered with Katie's Way (KW) and No Stone Unturned (NSU) to help raise awareness for each organization. The two non-profit organizations were featured as the team names for the program's final ball contest.
Head coach Pete Hughes, entering his sixth season, installed 19 Ways when he came to Manhattan as a community service initiative designed to have a positive impact on the community on 19 different occasions.
No Stone Unturned opened scoring with the help of a second-inning solo homer by sophomore Cadyn Karl. The Edmond, Okla., product launched a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall.
After walking in four straight pitches, Jaden Parsons came around the bases on a single through the 5-6 hole by Nick English, leveling the score at 1-all in the third frame. Kyan Lodice put NSU back on top with a solo shot out to right field.
Both of K-State's squads exchanged a pair of runs with NSU leading, 4-3, heading into the seventh.
In the top of the inning, KW's offense came alive, stringing together four consecutive hits to take a three-run lead, 7-4. Chuck Ingram and Mason Schwalbach recorded back-to-back singles before scoring on a double from Cayden Phillips.
A native of Amarillo, Texas, Phillips crossed the plate on a ground ball to second before the seventh and final run was walked in.
NSU immediately responded in the bottom of the frame as Carson Queck singled through the left side to lead off the rally.
With runners on first and second, Brady Day squared up for a two-run double down the right-field line to bring the game back within one. NSU loaded the bases to add pressure on KW's defense, but junior Sam Roberts forced two balls in the air to hold off the threat.
Nine pitchers saw action on the mound Sunday, with Buss earning the win and Micah Dean the save while JJ Slack was credited the loss, allowing four runs. Right-hander Josh Wintroub, a graduate transfer from Littleton, Colo., tossed a game-high three innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
Chuck Ingram, who was ranked 55th overall among D1Baseball.com's 2024 Top Impact Transfers, paced both squads offensively as the transfer from Wichita State went 4-for-5 with an RBI.
