K-State Lose to SMU in Last Stretch of Road Games

The Wildcats will compete at home for first time on March 1
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team dropped their match 4-0 against SMU on Friday (Feb. 24) at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas, Texas.
The Wildcats (1-9) could not keep up after the Mustangs (4-4) won the doubles point and three singles matches in straight sets.
Sophomore Florentine Dekkers was defeated by No. 89 ranked Hadley Doyle, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 1 position. Freshman Vanesa Suarez and senior Rosanna Maffei were also defeated in two sets, Suarez in the No. 2 spot against Taylor Johnson, 6-3, 6-3 and Maffei against Drew Morris 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 position.
Three singles matches went unfinished when SMU clinched the match.
Junior Manami Ukita was up on her opponent, Maja Makoric, in the No. 5 spot 7-6 (7-2), 3-1. Junior Maria Santos' first set against Lana Mavor went into a tiebreaker at 7-6 (7-2) and she was fighting back 3-1 in the No. 6 position. Freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska was down 7-5, 5-2 against Jackie Nylander in the No. 3 spot.
The Mustangs won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Nylander and Makoric defeated Dekkers and Gruszczynska, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot, while Doyle and Mavor won 6-2 over Quamar and Ukita at No. 3. Maffei and Santos battled against the No. 24 ranked team Johnson and Morris, 5-3, before the point was clinched.
The Wildcats will return home for their first two homes matches on Wednesday, March 1 against Kansas City and Friday, March 3 against Wichita State.
