Wildcats’ Winning Streak Snapped on Saturday

Mar 18, 2023 | Baseball

WACO, Texas – K-State's nine-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon as Baylor defeated the Wildcats, 8-4, to even the Big 12 series 1-1 at Baylor Ballpark.

The Bears (7-12) grabbed their first conference victory of the season after limiting to Wildcats (13-6) to just six hits with eight strikeouts.

"We had plenty of opportunities to turn that game back to us but unfortunately we couldn't capitalize," said head coach Pete Hughes. "Baylor got the two-out hit all day, pitched well and hit better than we did. We'll be better tomorrow and focus on winning a road series."

K-State starter Jackson Wentworth received his second loss of the season to move to 1-2. The Urbandale, Iowa native tossed three complete innings allowing two earned runs on four hits with four walks.

Baylor's Mason Marriott allowed just one run during his six innings with four walks and six strikeouts while Cole Stasio was credited his first save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cats led off scoring in the in the first frame for the second straight day with Raphael Pelletier recording his 10th RBI of the season. Leadoff Brendan Jones walked before stealing 90-feet to move into scoring position until the sophomore moved to third on a groundout to short. With one out, Pelletier hit a 2-1 pitch out of range of the Bears second baseman to give K-State the early one-run lead.

Baylor quickly gained confidence after leveling the score in the second when Cortlan Castle registered just his fifth hit of the season with an RBI single.

The Bears took their first lead of the series in the third frame after the Cats walked in a run before pulling away with four runs to lead 6-1 after six frames.

Cole Johnson ended the drought in the seventh as the senior left fielder hit through the 3-4 hole to score Roberto Pena from second until K-State ran into a 4-6-3 double play to end the Cats momentum.

After shutting down the Bears in order, the Wildcats brought the score within two the eighth. Nick Goodwin and Cash Rugely each walked to bring Dom Hughes up to bat with one out. The junior's check swing found the green in left field to bring home Goodwin to make it 6-3.
