K-State in Second Place After First Day of All-American
Mar 20, 2023 | Men's Golf
HUMBLE, Texas - The 17th-ranked Kansas State men's golf team is at 2-under par 574 and in three-way tie for second place after two rounds of action on Monday at the All-American Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 7,425-yard Golf Club of Houston. The Wildcats carded an even-par 288 first round and a 2-under par 286 second round.
"I thought we played really solid today. All five guys contributed, which shows the amount of depth we have," said head coach Grant Robbins. "The course played tough. We dropped a few strokes there towards the end, but that can happen pretty easily with as difficult as the finishing holes are."
K-State is tied with No. 14 Tennessee and No. 29 Ole Miss, while it leads two other ranked opponents in No. 47 LSU and No. 46 Houston. The Cats will have some work ahead of them to overtake No. 36 Louisville, which has an eight-stroke lead at 10-under par 566.
A tight 107-man leaderboard, which is led by Santiago De La Feunte of Houston and Jake Hall of Tennessee at 7-under par 137, sees all five Cats in the top-30, each a stroke off from one another beginning with Will Hopkins. He is pacing K-State in a tie for 11th place at 1-under par 143.
The senior carded a 2-under par first round — his 12th under-par round of the season — and a 1-over par 73 second round. Hopkins is just one stroke away from the top-10, where he has already finished four times this season and 10 times in his career.
Nicklaus Mason carded back-to-back even-par 72 rounds to sit in a tie for 15th place at an even-par 144. Mason had a double-bogey on hole No. 5 of his second round, but he made up for it by going bogey free the rest of the way. Like Hopkins, he's put himself in position for another top-10 finish, which would be the fourth of the season for the Shawnee, Kansas native.
Tim Tillmanns got started with a 3-over par 75 first round but responded with a 2-under par 70 second round to move up 28 spots. He is now tied for 23rd place at 1-over par 145.
In a tie for 28th place is both Cooper Schultz and Luke O'Neill at 2-over par 146. O'Neill shot a 4-over par 75 opening round before making a 23-spot jump with a 1-under par second round. Schultz's 18 hole scores were the exact inverse, as he shot a 1-under par 71 first round and a 4-over par 75 second round.
Laurenz Schiergen is competing in a separate individual tournament held on the Member Course and is tied for 12th place at 5-over par 149. Schiergen carded a 2-over par 74 first round and a 3-over par 75 second round. Brett Schell of Ole Miss leads that event at 6-under par 138.
The All-American will conclude Tuesday starting at 8 a.m. Fans can follow live scoring on Golfstat.com as Kansas State hopes to make a final push.
"We are in a good spot going into tomorrow," said Robbins. "We just need to continue to be disciplined in our decision making stay with the process, and I think we will be right there."
