MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State senior Haley Vargas holds a 36-hole individual lead as she paced the Kansas State women's golf team on the first day of The Bruzzy on Saturday at the par-70, 5,976-yard Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club.
Vargas is at 2-under par 138 - the lowest 36-hole score of her career - and she is in search of her first-career collegiate victory by holding a one-shot lead entering Sunday's final round. Her second-round score of 2-under par 68 was one shy of her career best to help her move up two spots on the leaderboard from the morning round.
"Haley played great today," head coach Kristi Knight said. "She never seemed to waiver, had a great mindset and showed great patience on a really long day."
As a team, the Wildcats are in seventh place at 26-under par 586 and are just one stroke outside the top five. Kansas State is five shots ahead of No. 35 TCU and 12 shots in front of No. 36 Houston.
"It was unfortunate that we dropped a few shots late as a team, but there was a lot of good out there," Knight said. "We need to get some rest tonight and come out tomorrow with a great mentality."
K-State has two other players in the top 25 with Manon Donche-Gay tied for 22nd at 6-over par 146 and Noa Van Beek tied for 25th at 7-over par 147. Douche-Gay shot back-to-back rounds of 73, and Van Beek went 74 and 73 in her first two rounds of the event.
Gabriela McNelly enters the final round tied for 74th at 18-over par 158, while Kate Tilma is tied for 82nd at 23-over par 163. Competing as an individual, Napua Glossner is tied for 65th with a 14-over par 154.
Host school and No. 42 North Texas leads the field with a 36-hole score of 3-over par 563, eight shots ahead of second-place Tulsa.
The final round of The Bruzzy begins Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live results are available at Golfstat.com.
