MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State senior women's golfer Haley Vargas was rewarded for her successful senior season as she earned an individual bid into the 2023 NCAA San Antonio Regional, the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Selection Committee announced Wednesday during College Central on GOLF Channel.
Vargas was selected as the third-ranked individual to compete at TPC San Antonio, May 8-10. It is the fifth time a Wildcat individual will advance to an NCAA Regional and the first since Connie Jaffrey in 2018. Others to advance were Christine Boucher in 2003 and Madison Talley in both 2015 and 2016. Like Vargas, Talley also played in San Antonio in 2015.
"I knew I had a really good season overall, but I didn't really know how the rankings worked and exactly what I needed to be ranked in order to get in," Vargas said. "Coach sent me a text on Monday and was like, 'Hey, you have a chance at it.' So, I was really looking forward to it. Just to be able to play in the postseason, it's been my goal since I committed here back in 2019. I remember telling Coach Knight, 'I want to win a conference championship. I want to go to the postseason.' That's one of my goals. To finally get that opportunity is super special. I'm looking forward to it."
Vargas holds a team-leading 73.30 stroke average this season to rank second in school history, while her 75.72 career average ranks sixth. She has posted a pair of top-20 finishes, including a career-best tie for third place at the Dale McNamara Invitational in October.
"I'm just super excited for Haley," head coach Kristi Knight said. "She puts a lot of work into her game and takes ownership of her game. I'm excited for her and proud of her. She's a great kid."
A native of Lubbock, Texas, Vargas also leads the 2022-23 Wildcats in rounds even or under par (9) and percentage of rounds counted toward the team score (96.63%). She has carded six of the best 13 rounds among K-State women's golfers this year, including a 68 earlier this month at The Bruzzy and a 69 at the Dale McNamara Invitational. Vargas also holds six of the top 12 54-hole scores among the Wildcats this year with her best being a 3-under par 213 at the MountainView Collegiate.
The NCAA San Antonio Regional is one of six sites that have 12 teams and six individuals. The top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional site will advance to play in the National Championship, May 19-24, at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
