Apr 03, 2023 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. - The 24th-ranked Kansas State men's golf team is currently in eighth place at 15-under par as play was suspended due to darkness during the second round of the Mossy Oak Collegiate on Monday held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Mossy Oak Golf Club.
The event endured a nearly two-hour delay in the morning due to poor course conditions following overnight storms. The Wildcats carded a 7-under par 281 during the first round and were at 8-under par midway through the second 18 when play was halted. The Wildcats are one shot behind No. 43 LSU and within four strokes of the top five, while they hold a two-shot lead on No. 17 Alabama.
"The guys played solid today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The course was really soft with the rain we had last night, and with minimal wind, the scores were very low. We've made quite a few birdies. We just have to clean up some of the silly mistakes and we will have a chance at a solid finish tomorrow."
The senior duo of Will Hopkins and Tim Tillmanns pace the Wildcats on the leaderboard, and each notched their team-leading 14th under-par round of the season in the morning round.
Hopkins, a product of Lincolnshire, England, who is ranked 89th in the Golfstat Top 100, recorded a bogey-free first round of 3-under par 69 and is currently 3-under par in the second round. He enters play on Tuesday tied for 11th at 6-under par.
Tillmanns, who is ranked 67th in the nation, went 2-under par 70 in the morning round and has matched Hopkins' 3-under par start to the second 18. The Cologne, Germany, native has moved 12 spots up the leaderboard in the second round into a tie for 16th.
Sophomore Cooper Schultz shot even-par 72 in the first round and is currently 1-under par in the second thanks in part to an eagle on No. 12, his second hole of the afternoon. The Andover, Kansas, product begins play tomorrow in a tie for 50th.
Nicklaus Mason, another sophomore, turned in a 2-under par 70 in the first 18 - his ninth under-par round of the season - and the Shawnee, Kansas, native is currently 4-over par in the second round as he is tied for 66th.
Junior Luke O'Neill carded a 5-over par 77 on Monday morning, but he has bounced back in the second round, moving nine spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 78th thanks to a 1-under par round thus far in the second 18.
All seven teams ahead of K-State on the leaderboard are ranked in the Golfstat Top 50 with No. 4 Auburn and No. 15 Tennessee leading the event at 28-under par. Sarut Vongchaisit of Ole Miss is atop the individual leaderboard at 13-under par, one stroke ahead of Cincinnati's Ryan Ford.
The conclusion of second-round play of the Mossy Oak Collegiate will begin at 8 a.m., on Tuesday morning with continuous play into the third and final round. Live results are available at Golfstat.com.
