
K-State Battles on Day One of Big 12 Match Play

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Kansas State women's golf team earned a tie against No. 23 Oklahoma State while suffering narrow defeats to No. 12 Baylor, No. 17 Iowa State and No. 41 TCU on Friday during the first two rounds of the Big 12 Women's Golf Match Play held at Kierland Golf Club.
The first time facing their conference foes in a match-play event saw the Wildcats going up against two teams in simultaneous matches in both the morning and afternoon, K-State tied Oklahoma State, 2-2-1, and fell to Baylor, 3-1-1 in the second round. During the morning round while matched with Iowa State and TCU, K-State lost 3-1-1 to the Horned Frogs and 3-2 to the Cyclones.
Kansas State enters play on Saturday in ninth place with 7.5 points for the event, just behind Kansas (9.0), Iowa State (9.5) and Texas Tech (9.5).
"I'm proud of the team's effort today during hard-fought matches," head coach Kristi Knight said. "We played with lots of heart, especially during our tie against Oklahoma State. The level of golf by all the players in our matches was high. Match play is a great format and competitive experience."
Seniors Haley Vargas and Manon Donche-Gay each scored 1 Up victories over their Cowgirl opponents. Vargas, a native of Lubbock, Texas, led for a majority of the match until Han-Hsuan Yu tied her after hole No. 14. Vargas quickly retook the lead on the next hole and matched Yu the rest of the way for the win. Donche-Gay was down three holes against Haley Jones through No. 8 but won three of the next four to tie the match after hole No. 12. The pair was tied again after No. 17 before the Avignon, France native won the 18th hole to pick up the win.
Donche-Gay also earned a win against BaiMai Seema of Baylor, 2&1, as she broke a tie on hole No. 9 and led the rest of the way. Remington Isaac earned a tie against the Bears' Hannah Karg as she was down by three holes after the front nine. The Montgomery, Texas, native battled back on the second nine to square the match through 18 holes.
Donche-Gay and Gabriela McNelly got the morning started with 2 Up victories over their Cyclone opponents. McNelly lost each of the first three holes against Ruby Chou before quickly bouncing back and taking control over the second nine. Donche-Gay held the lead for most of the way with the exception of four early holes in which she was down one to Iowa State's Liyana Durisic. Donche-Gay tied then took the lead on the 11th and 12th holes and kept Durisic at arm's length the rest of the way.
Against TCU, Napua Glossner picked up a 2&1 victory over Trinity King, while Noa Van Beek tied Lois Lau. Glossner and King went back and forth for a majority of the match before the San Diego, California, native won the 12th and 16th holes en route to the victory.
The Wildcats will face Kansas and Oklahoma beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. (CT) on Saturday with the hopes of making the semifinal round Saturday afternoon. Live results can be followed at Golfstat.com.
