DALLAS, Texas – K-State relief pitcher Tyson Neighbors was named a finalist for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, announced by the association Wednesday.
The Stopper of the Year Award, established in 2005, is given to the top NCAA Division I reliever. The winner will be announced June 16 at the 2023 College World Series at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
Neighbors, a Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American, is one of 10 relief pitchers to be named finalists as he becomes the first Wildcat in school history to earn Stopper of the Year recognition.
The Royse City, Texas product led the league with 11 saves to go with a 1.85 earned run average while striking out 86 batters en route to First Team All-Big 12 honors. His 11 saves ties third in the program's single-season records and ranks ninth in the career leaderboard.
Neighbors posted a 5-1 record on the hill, totaling 48 2/3 innings where he issued just 16 walks, with opponents hitting .135 against him. He fanned a career-high eight in the Cats' victory over Texas during the regular-season.
The sophomore received an invitation to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp to compete for an opportunity to represent the United States in a friendship series against Chinese Taipei and Japan from June 30-July 12, alongside teammate Kaelen Culpepper.
K-State finished the 2023 season 35-24, marking just the sixth 35-win season in the 123-year history of Wildcat baseball and first since 2013. The Wildcats reached the semifinal round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship for the third consecutive year.
