The four remaining singles matches will continue tomorrow
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The K-State women's tennis team has unfinished business on Saturday (Sept. 23) in the second day of the Charlotte Invitational, as inclement weather stopped play at the Hilton-Wagner Tennis Complex in Charlotte, N.C.
Competing against Charlotte, Iowa and Wisconsin, three Wildcat doubles teams competed and four singles matches were finished before rain stopped play with the rest to be resumed on Sunday (Sept. 24).
In doubles action, senior Manami Ukita and sophomore Vanesa Suarez claimed a quick victory over Charlotte's Ruxi Schech and Lucie Petruzelova, 6-1. Sophomore Maria Santos and freshman Tereza Polakova fought but fell 6-4 against Wisconsin's Ellison Reynoldson and Ariel Johnson. Junior Veronika Kulhava and freshman Jillian Harkin could not repeat yesterday's success in doubles, losing 6-2 to the Badgers' Kaja Jacobson and Ava Martin.
Kulhava was successful in another three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9, against Barbora Pokorna of Iowa. On Friday (Sept. 22) she defeated the 49ers' Ares Teixido Garcia, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Senior Aleen Quamar and Harkin both lost their singles matches, 6-2, 6-4. Quamar was defeated by Charlotte's Sara Suchankova, while Harkin was not able to repeat her success from yesterday's match, losing to Emma Wilkins of Charlotte.
Polakova was the last to finish her match, dropping both sets to Johnson from Wisconsin, 6-3, 6-2.
Suarez was down in the first set, 6-2, to the Hawkeyes' Daianne Hayashida, but came back in the second set, 6-3, before leaving the match, 9-9, in the third with the postponement. Ukita also lost her first set, 6-4, but was fighting back in the second at 6-6 against Jacobson of Wisconsin.
Santos and freshman Charlotte Keitel started their matches late, Santos competing 3-2 against the Badgers' Reynoldson. Keitel was successful in her first set, beating Wisconsin's Martin, 6-0.
K-State will finish up four singles matches on Sunday (Sept. 24) to conclude the Charlotte Invitational. The Wildcats continue their fall schedule with the ITA All-American tournament in Cary, N.C., starting Saturday (Sept. 30) at the Cary Tennis Park.
FROM THE COURT
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On the team's day two performances…
"Better overall performance in doubles today. Vanesa and Manami looked great together and beat a solid team from Charlotte. We came out more prepared in singles today. All of our players were mindful of what they could build on from yesterday and it showed. Bad luck with the rain this afternoon and not being able to finish some of our matches. It'll be exciting to see if we can continue in the morning and improve on day three."
