Cats Tied for Sixth After One Round in Oklahoma
Sep 23, 2023 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – Facing difficult conditions and a tough field, the Kansas State women's golf team carded a 4-over par 284 and is tied for sixth place following the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic on Saturday held at the par-70, 6,182-yard Belmar Golf Club.
Facing a 15-team field – 11 of which advanced to the postseason last year – the Wildcats are tied with host school Oklahoma, Purdue and North Texas entering Sunday's second round.
"We played a steady round of golf today in tough conditions," head coach Stew Burke said. "The ladies will be the first to admit that they left a few shots out there. However, they stuck to the plan today and never let themselves get frustrated in the wind. I'm proud of the effort, but there's a lot of golf left to be played over the next two days. It's important we rest up and come out of the gates fast tomorrow morning.
K-State received a round of 3-under par 67 from senior Haley Vargas, who recorded five birdies on the day. The Lubbock, Texas, native enters the second round tied for fourth place.
In her first collegiate round, freshman Alenka Navarro shot even par and is currently tied for 16th place. Another freshman, Julia Ballester Barrio, is tied for 45th place following a round of 3-over par 73.
Senior Gabriela McNelly and junior transfer Carla Bernat are tied for 57th place at 4-over par 74.
Defending national champion Wake Forest leads the field at 10-under par 270, while the Demon Decans also have the top individual in Carolina Lopez-Chacarra at 7-under par 63.
Tee times for the second round of the Schooner Fall Classic begin at 9 a.m. Live results can be followed at www.GolfGenius.com.
