K-State Women’s Rowing Debut Spring 2024 Schedule
Jan 30, 2024 | Rowing
Season starts on March 16 in Sacramento
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State women's rowing head coach Patrick Sweeney announced the schedule for the spring 2024 racing season on Tuesday (Jan. 30).
"We are looking forward to our season and having the opportunity to race against some strong competition," Sweeney said. "Our athletes are preparing for a competitive schedule. Each race is a chance to see what they are capable of and continue pushing the program forward."
Prior to their first competition in Sacramento, Calif., the team will spend a week in the same location for their spring training camp. The Wildcats will then open their season with the Hornet Invitational on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17, hosted by Sacramento State.
"The overall work ethic and attitudes on the team are much better this year," junior Emily Stark said. "We as a team have held each other more accountable during workouts and have pushed each other to succeed and reach our goals, getting better each day."
"With all that we want to accomplish as a team, it was expected that the workload preparing for the season would be higher than last year, and while it has been tough, and will continue to be tough, I feel that we are going to be better prepared for the season," sophomore Sylvia Cunningham said. "Already, I think we are in a better position to be more successful than we were last year. I'm excited to see the team continue to excel and see how that translates to our racing season."
The team will then travel to Sarasota, Fla. for the Sunshine State Invitational on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30, hosted by new Big 12 conference member UCF.
The following week the 'Cats will head up to Omaha, Neb. for the annual Creighton Duel on Saturday, April 6.
"I am looking forward to making memories with my teammates and being back on the water competing, especially against a few new teams and continuing the progress from last year," Cunningham said.
On Saturday, April 13, K-State will race against new competition as they take on Iowa and Minnesota—for a double duel in Kansas City, Kan. at Wyandotte County Lake.
The Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship will take place on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing the growth we've made and to seeing our hard work from this fall and winter pay off," Stark said. "We were such a young team last year, so I'm excited to see how we've developed. We accomplished great things last year but there is definitely more to come this year."
Following a break in their schedule, the team will then race in-state rival Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown on Saturday, May 4 at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kan.
The Wildcats will then have two weeks to prepare for the Big 12 Championship on Sunday, May 19, returning to Sarasota, Fla.
"Like every season, our goal is to put as many boats as possible in medal contention by the time we make it to our conference championship," Sweeney said. "We're looking forward to seeing the progress our athletes make as they continue to gain experience throughout the spring."
