KAPOLEI, O'ahu, Hawai'i – Led by senior Carla Bernat's round of 3-under par 69, the Kansas State women's golf team is tied for sixth place in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational following first-round play on Monday at par-72, 6,231-yard Kapolei Golf Club.
The Wildcats recorded an opening-round score of 1-under par 287, one shot behind a three-way tie for third place and three shots behind second-place UC Irvine. The Wildcats enter the second round tied with Gonzaga and Sacramento State.
"It was a bit of a slow start, but they hung in there," head coach Stew Burke said. "All five are playing well, so we just need to convert on a few more opportunities early tomorrow and get some momentum going. There are two days left to climb, and I know we have the ability to move up the leaderboard."
Bernat, a native of Castellon, Spain, is tied for sixth place through 18 holes after registering her fourth round in the 60s this season and 28th in her career. She was able to hit the mark thanks to a bogey-free and 4-under par back nine with birdies on three of the final five holes. Bernat begins second-round play one shot back of a tie for third place and three shots back of second place.
Junior Noa van Beek is tied for 20th place at even-par 72 as she countered two bogeys with a pair of birdies, including one on No. 17.
Senior Sophie Bert and sophomore Alenka Navarro are tied for 29th place following a first-round score of 1-over par 73. Navarro got to 1-over par through seven holes but parred out to remain steady.
Freshman Nanami Nakashima will begin second-round play tied for 45th place at 2-over par 74.
Colorado State leads the field after firing a 12-under par 276. The Rams also have the individual leader in Lacey Uchida at 8-under par 64.
The second round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational will begin with a 9 a.m. HT (2 p.m. CT) shotgun start on Tuesday. Live results are available on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
