LOXLEY, Ala. – A combined three rounds in the 60s from seniors Nicklaus Mason and Cooper Schultz has led the Kansas State men's golf team into second place following the first two rounds of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational on Saturday at the par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club.
The Wildcats recorded a 36-hole score of 14-under par 562 on Saturday, which included a round of 9-under par 279 in the afternoon. They enter Sunday's final round three shots back of first-place Illinois.
After putting together a round of 6-under par 66 in the morning, Mason turned in a career-low score of 8-under par 64 in the afternoon to hold a four-shot advantage on the individual leaderboard at 14-under par 130. Mason's second-round total of 64 tied for the third-lowest round in school history, a mark that Schultz tallied in the final round of the Wildcat Invitational last month.
Schultz, who had two rounds in the 60s this season entering the event, posted a 3-under par 69 in the first round and a 2-under par 70 in the afternoon. The Andover, Kansas, native is tied for seventh place at 5-under par 139.
"The guys played really well today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The conditions were perfect for scoring, and we did a good job hanging in there and getting a lot of birdie looks. Nick was on his game today. His ballstriking was exceptional, and he obviously made a few putts. I know it's cliche, but we just have to stick to our process, stay focused on what we can control and put five solid rounds on the board tomorrow and see what happens."
Freshman Erik Sabelstrom Holmberg is tied for 47th place at 3-over par 147. He is one shot ahead of senior Kobe Valociek and freshman Fionn Dobbin, who are tied for 53rd place.
Playing as an individual, senior Ian McCrary is tied for 32nd place at 1-over par 145, which includes a second-round score of 4-under par 68.
The final round of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational begins on Sunday at 7:45 a.m. Live results can be viewed on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
