Cats Rally to Net Tie on Final Day of Big 12 Match Play
Oct 09, 2024 | Men's Golf
HOCKLEY, Texas – Battling back from a deficit throughout the entire ninth-place match on the final day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, the Kansas State men's golf team rallied to earn a tie against Iowa State on Wednesday to close out the event held at the par-71, 7,007-yard Houston Oaks.
The Cyclones were in line for a 3-2-1 victory, but senior Cooper Schultz birdied his final hole of the day – the par-4 10th – to halve his match and give the Wildcats a tie. K-State also received 1 Up victories on Wednesday from senior Nicklaus Mason and freshman Fionn Dobbin.
In total, the Wildcats went 2-1-2 in the 2024 Big 12 Match Play Tournament with wins over UCF and Houston and ties against Oklahoma State and Iowa State. K-State's individual match record was 12-10-3 with Mason and Dobbin, as well as freshman Erik Sabelstrom Holmberg, each carding three wins.
"I am really proud of how we competed not only today but this entire week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We got down early in three of the matches today, but the guys kept grinding and kept us in it. Cooper made some huge birdies on the last few holes, including one at the last, which got us the half.
"This is such a great format to play, especially early in the year," Robbins continued. "There's literally pressure on every hole, and each one of our players came up big in key moments to help the team. We are working hard to instill that toughness and resiliency within our team, and we took a big step forward in that area this week."
Iowa State's Zach May led Schultz from the first hole and held a three-hole advantage late in the match. However, Schultz, a product of Andover, Kansas, won three of the final four holes to register the tie.
Mason was up three holes with three to play before Iowa State's Luke Gutschewski won the 16th and 17th holes to close the gap. However, Mason, a native of Shawnee, Kansas, halved the 18th hole of the day to preserve the 1 Up victory.
Dobbin held a two-hole advantage over the Cyclones' Luke Metcalf following six different holes throughout the match before Metcalf earned a victory on No. 8, the 16th hole of the day. Dobbin, a native of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, was able to equal Metcalf on the next two holes to hold on for the win.
Senior Kobe Valociek, who earned two wins during the week, lost a 2&1 decision to Paul Beauvy, while Sabelstrom Holmberg suffered a 5&3 loss at the hands of Owen Sawyer.
Kansas State will close out its fall slate at the Steelwood Collegiate, October 26-27, at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Alabama.
