HOCKLEY, Texas – The Kansas State men's golf team put together a pair of impressive victories over UCF and Houston during the third and fourth rounds of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Tuesday held at the par-71, 7,007-yard Houston Oaks.
The Wildcats carded a 3-1-1 win over UCF in the morning before a 3-2 win over Houston in the afternoon. The Wildcats finished in second place in Pool B and will take on Iowa State in the ninth-place match on Wednesday morning.
"I am really proud of the guys and the way they competed today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "In the win over UCF, we got down early and just kept at it, making some clutch putts to get the win. I thought we played really well against Houston. It was a hard-fought match that went back and forth all afternoon, but we were able to close it out again at the end. We are looking forward to a solid finish tomorrow."
Senior Nicklaus Mason led the Wildcats with a pair 1 Up of victories on Tuesday, defeating UCF's Marc Keller in the morning before topping former Wildcat Laurenz Schiergen of Houston in the afternoon.
Mason was down two holes to Keller with seven left during the morning match, but he won the 13th, 14th and 17th holes before halving the 18th hole to pick up the win. His match against Schiergen was tightly contested as Mason held a one-hole lead or the match was tied over the entire afternoon. With two holes left and the match even, Mason won the 17th hole of the day – No. 11 – and tied the final hole to preserve the victory.
K-State also received a dominating 5&3 win by senior Kobe Valociek over Houston's Grant Doggett. A transfer from Virginia Tech, Valociek led by one hole through the first 11 before winning each of the next four holes to close out the match.
The Wildcats' third win over Houston came from freshman Fionn Dobbin in a 2&1 victory over Jacob Borow as he maintained a two-hole lead over the final four holes of play. The Cougars' two victories of the day came against Ian McCrary (5&3) and Erik Sabelstrom Holmberg (2 Up).
The Wildcats came roaring back to collect the win in the morning match against UCF as the Knights held the lead until the latter half of the round. Sabelstrom Holmberg led the way with a 2&1 victory over Jakob Stubhaug as he took the lead on the 12th hole of the match – No. 18 – and held that one-hole advantage until a win on the 17th hole of the morning garnered the victory.
The Wildcats also received a 1 Up win from McCrary over UCF's Chase Haygood. The Overland Park, Kansas, native was down by two holes before victories on the ninth hole of the day – No. 15 – as well as the 13th and 14th holes of the day – Nos. 1 and 2 – to take a one-hole lead. Haygood won the 15th hole of the round to tie the match before McCrary came right back with a win on the next hole and halved the final two to pick up the victory.
Dobbin forced a tie with UCF's Lucas Dutartre in a match that he trailed by three before working back to a tie over the final three holes. Valociek suffered a 1 Up loss to UCF's Clemente Silva.
