LAST TIME OUT
Junior guard Brendan Hausen led four Wildcats in double figures with a career-high 22 points, including 6 made 3-point field goals, as K-State earned a 77-64 wire-to-wire win over Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon before 9,928 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.
K-State (2-0) never trailed in the contest, as the Wildcats connected on 57.8 percent (26-of-45) from the field, including 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from 3-point range, with 16 assists on 26 made field goals. Thanks to Hausen's 6 triples, the team made double-digit 3-pointers (10) for the second straight game. The Vikings converted 19 turnovers into 21 points to keep the game closer.
KEY STORYLINES
- K-State will be looking to go 3-0 to start a season for the first time since opening the 2022-23 campaign with 6 consecutive victories. Last season, the Wildcats rebounded from its season-opening loss to No. 21/22 USC in Las Vegas with 3 straight wins (Bellarmine, South Dakota State, Providence).
- It's just 2 games but K-State seems to be a better 3-point shooting team after connecting on 23 treys on 43.4 percent shooting highlighted by junior Brendan Hausen's team-high 10 makes. The 23 triples are the most after the first 2 games, surpassing the 20 in 2023-24, while the 13 vs. New Orleans tied for the 10th-most in a game in school history. This will be put to the test against LSU, which ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense (11.8).
- Newcomers have made quite an impact so far, combining to score 126 of the team's 166 points, including 5 of the 7 double-digit scoring games. Junior Brendan Hausen (17 and 22 points) and senior Max Jones (19 and 11 points) join senior returner David N'Guessan (21 and 12 points) as the only Wildcats to score in double figures in each of the first 2 games.
- The Wildcats have been impressive at Bramlage Coliseum under Tang, posting a 31-4 mark with just one non-conference loss (Nebraska in 2023) in that span. Last season, the team went 15-3 at home (14-3 at Bramlage Coliseum) with losses to the Huskers, Oklahoma and TCU.
- The game will be a homecoming for the Tigers' Cam Carter, who transferred to LSU after 2 seasons at K-State. He averaged 10.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals in starting all 70 games of his career. He scored a team-high 21 points in last season's meeting in Baton Rouge.
A K-STATE WIN WOULD…
- Make the Wildcats 3-0 for the first time since 2022-23.
- Move the Wildcats to 3-0 all-time vs. LSU.
- Move coach Jerome Tang to 32-4 at Bramlage Coliseum.
- Give the Wildcats an 184-56 non-conference mark since 2006.
- Extend its home non-conference mark to 145-16 since 2006.
NOTES ON LSU
- Led by third-year head coach Matt McMahon, LSU returns 6 lettermen, including 2 starters, from a team that posted a 17-16 overall record, including a 9-9 mark in the SEC for a tie for seventh place. The Tigers advanced to the NIT, losing to North Texas.
- LSU (2-0) has opened the year with wins over ULM (95-60) and Alabama State (74-61). They are averaging 84.5 points on 48.2 percent shooting while allowing just 60.5 points on 36.1 percent shooting. The Tigers are No. 1 in the NCAA for 3-point field goal percentage defense at 11.8 percent (4-of-34).
- Senior Cam Carter paces four Tigers in double figures, averaging 21 points on 52.2 percent shooting from the field, including 61.5 percent from 3-point range. He was joined in double figures by junior Jalen Reed (15.0 ppg.), graduate Dji Bailey (14.0 ppg.) and fifth-year Jordan Sears (12.5 ppg.). Bailey and Derek Fountain lead the team with 6.5 rebounds per game.
- McMahon has a 187-102 record in his coaching career, including a 154-67 mark in 7 seasons at Murray State (2015-22), where he led the Racers to 3 NCAA Tournament appearances (2018, 2019, 2022).
LAST GAME OUT
- LSU picked up its second victory of the season on Sunday with a 74-61 win over Alabama State at home. The Hornets led by as many as 10 points in the first half, including 32-26 at halftime, before the Tigers rallied with a big second half. LSU outscored ASU, 48-29, in the second half, connecting on 59 percent from the field while holding the Hornets to just 27 percent shooting.
- Three different LSU players scored in double figures, including a game-high 21 points from senior transfer Cam Carter, who hit on 5-of-11 field goals, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He was joined in double figures by 18 from senior Jordan Sears and 15 from graduate Dji Bailey.
FAMILIAR FACE
- The game will be a homecoming for former Wildcat Cam Carter, who transferred from K-State to LSU in the offseason. The Donaldsonville, La., native played 2 seasons at K-State, averaging 10.4 points on 38.8 percent shooting with 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.2 steals and 30.7 minutes per game in starting all 70 games in his career.
SERIES HISTORY
- K-State is 2-0 all-time against LSU, earning a 61-59 win in the 2022 Cayman Islands Classic Championship game on Nov. 23, 2022, before a 75-60 win in the first game of the home-and-home series at Maravich Center in Baton Rouge, La., on Dec. 9, 2023.
- K-State is 299-292 all-time vs. current members of the SEC, including a 165-98 mark in games played at home venues. This will be the first home game vs. an SEC school since a 64-50 win over Florida on Jan. 28, 2023.

LAST MEETING:
K-STATE 75, LSU 60 [Dec. 9, 2023]
- Louisiana native Cam Carter led four Wildcats in double figures in his return to his home state, as K-State earned a 75-60 win over LSU in the last meeting between the schools on Dec. 9, 2023, in Baton Rouge, La.
- Carter scored 19 of his 21 points in helping K-State build a 42-34 lead in the first half, connecting on 7-of-11 field goals, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. He was joined in double figures by Arthur Kaluma (17 points), Tylor Perry (14 points) and Will McNair Jr. (13 points).
LAST TIME OUT:
K-STATE 77, CLEVELAND STATE 64
- Junior Brendan Hausen led four Wildcats in double figures with a career-high 22 points, including 6 made 3-point field goals, as K-State earned a 77-64 wire-to-wire win over Cleveland State on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.
- Hausen followed up his 17-point effort in the season-opening win over New Orleans on Tuesday night with his first career 20-point game. He became the first Wildcat with 6 made 3-point field goals since Tylor Perry did so against Cincinnati on March 3, 2024. He is now shooting 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field, including 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from 3-point range, after 2 games.
- N'Guessan was joined in double figures by senior Max Jones (19 points) and junior Brendan Hausen (17 points), who combined for 8 of the Wildcats' 13 made 3-point field goals on the night. The 13 triples tied for the 10th-most in a game in school history and were the most since knocking down 14 against South Dakota State on Nov. 13, 2023, which was a season-high for 2023-24.
- Hausen was joined in double figures by seniors Coleman Hawkins (12 points), David N'Guessan (12 points) and Max Jones (11 points). Hawkins tied a career-high with 4 blocked shots to go with 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds in 31 minutes. N'Guessan went 6-of-6 from the field.
- K-State (2-0) never trailed in the game, as the Wildcats connected on 57.8 percent (26-of-45) from the field, including 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from 3-point range, with 16 assists on 26 made field goals. Thanks to Hausen's 6 treys, the team had double-digit 3-point field goals (10) for the second straight game. It was the highest field goal percentage since hitting on 58.2 percent (32-of-55) in the first-round win over Montana State in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
- The Wildcats, who led by as many as 23 in the second half, were prevented from a larger victory by 19 turnovers, which the Vikings (1-2) converted into 21 points. The team had more turnovers in the first half (10) than they had in the entire game (9) against New Orleans.
- However, K-State was able to turn Cleveland State over 20 times, including 12 steals, scoring 24 points off miscues. Junior Dug McDaniel was responsible for 5 of the team's 12 steals, becoming the first Wildcat with 5 or more steals in a game since Markquis Nowell did it vs. FAU in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
- Unlike the opener against UNO, the Wildcats got off to a fast start against the Vikings thanks in part to 6 early points from Hausen in a 10-2 start. The lead grew to 16 points (36-20) in the first half after a second 3-pointer from Hausen with 1:39 left before halftime.
- After CSU got to within 36-26 moments into the second half, K-State blew the game open by scoring 20 of the next 29 points to take its first 20-point lead at 56-35, forcing head coach Daniyal Robinson to call a timeout with 11:35 left. Hausen had a pair of 3-pointers in the run, along with triples from Hawkins and sophomore Macaleab Rich (first career 3-pointer).
- Back-to-back 3-pointers by Hausen and Max Jones gave K-State a 77-57 lead with 2:11 to play before CSU scored the game's final 7 points.
POSTGAME NEWS & NOTES
- K-State had double digit 3-point field goals for the second straight game, marking the first such occurrence since the 2022-23 season.
- K-State held advantages in points off turnovers (24-21) and fast-break points (17-4) while Cleveland State had the edge in points in the paint (34-32), second-chance points (18-14) and bench points (29-17).
- K-State registered 12 steals, marking its first double-digit steals total since posting 11 vs. No. 7/8 Iowa State (3/9/24) at the end of last season.
'CATS PICKED 8TH IN BIG 12 POLL; HAWKINS NAMED CO-NEWCOMER
- K-State was picked eighth in the new 16-team Big 12 preseason poll, while senior transfer Coleman Hawkins was named the league's co-Newcomer of the Year, alongside Baylor's Jeremy Roach.
- Hawkins is the first Wildcat to be selected as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and the fourth to be chosen for a preseason player honor, joining Michael Beasley (2007-08 Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year), Jacob Pullen (2010-11 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year) and Dean Wade (2018-19 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year).
- Hawkins, who earned All-Big Ten honors at Illinois in 2023-24, was also selected to the preseason All-Big 12 Second Team by the league coaches, joining Baylor's Norchad Omier and Roach, Iowa State's Keshon Gilbert and Kansas' Dajuan Harris Jr.
- Hawkins is also the first Wildcat to earn selection to one of the main preseason all-conference teams by the coaches since Barry Brown Jr. and Wade in 2018-19. He is one of eight players in school history to be chosen for preseason all-conference honors dating to Manny Dies in 1998-99. Others include Pullen and Curtis Kelly in 2010-11, Rodney McGruder in 2012-13 and Marcus Foster in 2014-15.
- K-State received 133 points to place eighth in the poll, just two points behind seventh-place Texas Tech and 17 points ahead of ninth-place BYU.
- Kansas was picked first with 215 points and nine first-place votes followed closely by Houston (211, five first-place votes), third-place Iowa State (194, one first-place vote), fourth-place Baylor (185) and fifth-place Arizona (179, one first-place vote).
- Hawkins has also been named to the watch list for the Naismith Trophy as well as the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.
SUCCESS IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
- K-State has posted a 183-56 (.764) record in non-conference play since the 2006-07 season. During that span, the Wildcats have a 144-16 (.899) mark at home venues (includes games played at Bramlage Coliseum, INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita and the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City) in non-conference play, including a 128-13 (.907) mark at Bramlage Coliseum.
- K-State's 12-1 non-conference mark in 2022-23 was the best since the 2009-10 team went a program-best 13-1. Last season, the team went 10-3 in non-conference play, including 7-1 at Bramlage Coliseum.
