Brown Reaches Career Milestone in Loss to No. 17 Baylor

Nov 13, 2024 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State senior Meg Brown achieved her 400th career block in the Wildcats three-set loss to No. 17 Baylor at Morgan Family Arena Wednesday – 21-25, 25-22, 25-18.

Brown, a senior from Santa Ana, California, entered the night needing just one block to reach the milestone and tallied her 400th in the first set. She finished the night with two block assists. With her 334 blocks from Pepperdine, Brown has totaled 401 in her collegiate career.

Baylor (18-6, 10-3 Big 12) stretched its win streak to eight, as the Bears defense limited K-State (9-13, 7-6 Big 12) to a .200 hitting efficiency with nine blocks. Two players eclipsed the 10-plus kill mark for the Bears led by Elise McGhee with 15 and Allie Sczech with 11.

Aliyah Carter, who turned in her 11th consecutive match with 10 or more kills, reached the 10-kill mark with a team-leading 14. Shaylee Myers added 11 followed by Aniya Clinton with nine, while Izzi Szulczewski and Ava LeGrand combined for 33 assists.

Defensively, senior Ella Larkin totaled 13 digs for the Cats followed by Symone Sims with seven. Jordyn Williams, who made her first appearance since October 10, had a team-best three blocks (one solo, two assists).

K-State will face No. 18 TCU on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Morgan Family Arena. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.

FROM THE CATS
Jason Mansfield, K-State Head Coach
On Shaylee Myers's impressive playing …
"She just continues to try to be aggressive, and I just love how aggressive she's been the last couple of matches. She's one of those players that is fearless and at moments that a lot of people kind of tip and get a little tentative and I think that's the big thing."

On what coaches did to get the team back on track in the second set…
"We focused on just trying to stay positive. We knew that we had not played our best, and so we're a couple plays away from really turning it around in any given set. There are lots of plays up to that point that we know we can make. We just have to be present and, again, stay aggressive and be in the moment. But we got to go for it. We can't be tentative."

On what the things that need to be improved for TCU's game…
"It's tough. I mean, there are a lot of little things. Defensively, we can be better as blockers. I thought we were scrambling. It's a good offensive team with a lot of really good arms, and that'll be true against TCU, which is a really good, athletic team. So yeah, I think we have to try to touch more balls than the net and try to slow them down. And then offensively, we must continue to pass so we can run offense. So, I think there's a lot of positive things from tonight. We just have to do it more often and be more consistent."
