K-STATE ENDS HOMESTAND TUESDAY VS. MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE
K-State concludes its 4-game homestand to open the 2024-25 season with a visit from SWAC foe Mississippi Valley State (1-3) on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum. The contest will tip off at 7 p.m., CT on ESPN+. The Wildcats leave Wednesday morning for the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, where they will take on George Washington (3-0) on Friday night at 7 p.m., CT.

This is the first meeting between K-State and Mississippi Valley State on the hardwood. The Delta Devils will be the first of two SWAC opponents on the 2024-25 schedule with UAPB set to visit on Dec. 1. The Wildcats are 19-1 all-time vs. teams from the SWAC.

LAST TIME OUT
A 16-2 run midway the first half gave LSU all the momentum it would need, as the Tigers shot 50 percent from the field to hand K-State its first loss of the season with a 76-65 win on Thursday night before 9,507 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

In the return of former Wildcat Cam Carter, who led all scorers with 20 points, the Tigers (3-0) were stellar on both end of the court, dominating the glass 43-25 while holding the Wildcats (2-1) to just 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, including 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from 3-point range.
Senior David N'Guessan and junior Dug McDaniel led the way with 16 points each, as McDaniel added a team-high 5 assists and 2 steals in his first career start at K-State.

KEY STORYLINES
  • K-State will look to bounce back from its first loss of the season with a visit from Mississippi Valley State (1-3), which has already played at Iowa State (44-83), Missouri (39-111) and Texas (43-89). The Delta Devils still have visits to BYU, Utah, UC Santa Barbara, Liberty, North Texas, Tulsa and LSU left before opening conference play. They have already equaled their win total from last season (1-30).
  • It's just 3 games but K-State seems to be a better 3-point shooting team after connecting on 28 treys on 37.8 percent shooting highlighted by junior Brendan Hausen's team-high 12 makes. LSU's top-ranked 3-point field goal percentage defense was effective against the Wildcats on Thursday with just 5 makes on 21 attempts, but the 23 triples in the first 2 games were the most-ever in that span. Hausen currently ranks 13th in the NCAA and second in the Big 12 with 4.0 3-pointers per game, while he is in the league's top 10 in every individual 3-point field goal category.
  • Newcomers have made quite an impact so far, combining to score 171 of the team's 231 points, including 6 of the 9 double-digit scoring games. Senior returner David N'Guessan (21, 12 and 16 points) is the only Wildcat to score in double figures in the first 3 games, but the next 5 highest scorers belong to newcomers, including 2 double-digit scoring efforts by junior Brendan Hausen and senior Max Jones and one each from senior Coleman Hawkins and junior Dug McDaniel.
  • Despite the LSU loss, the Wildcats have still been formidable at home under Tang, posting a 31-5 mark with two non-conference losses (Nebraska in 2023) in that span. Last season, the team went 15-3 at home (14-3 at Bramlage Coliseum) with losses to the Huskers, Oklahoma and TCU.

A K-STATE WIN WOULD…
  • Be the first win vs. Mississippi Valley State.
  • Move the Wildcats to 20-1 vs. SWAC opponents at home.
  • Move coach Jerome Tang to 32-5 at Bramlage Coliseum.
  • Give the Wildcats an 184-57 non-conference mark since 2006.
  • Extend its home non-conference mark to 145-17 since 2006.

NOTES ON MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE
  • Led by third-year head coach George Ivory, Mississippi Valley State is off to a 1-3 start after losing to Texas, 89-43, on Saturday. The Delta Devils have already played at Iowa State (44-83) and Missouri (39-111) with road trips ahead to BYU, Utah, UC Santa Barbara, Liberty, North Texas, Tulsa and LSU.
  • Mississippi Valley State has already equaled its win total from the 2023-24 season with a 66-49 win over Mississippi University for Women on Nov. 7. The Delta Devils went 1-30 a year ago, including 1-17 in SWAC play.
  • Mississippi Valley is averaging 48 points on 37.9 percent (75-of-198) shooting, including 22.4 percent (11-of-49) from 3-point range, while allowing 83 points on 48.9 percent (112-of-229) shooting, including 35.6 percent (31-of-87) from 3-point range.
  • Senior Alvin Stredic is the lone player averaging in double figures at 10 points per game on 42.1 percent shooting with a team-high 6.3 rebounds in 32.8 minutes per game. Two others - senior Donovan Sanders (9.5 ppg.) and junior Arthur Tate (9.3 ppg.) - are both averaging better than 9 points per game. Sanders leads the team in assists (2.5 apg.).
  • Ivory has a 147-329 record in his 16th season as a head coach, including a 7-60 mark in his third season at Mississippi Valley State.

LAST GAME OUT
  • Mississippi Valley State had a strong first-half performance against Texas, trailing 33-23, before the Longhorns overwhelmed the Delta Devils in the second half en route to an 89-43 victory on Saturday. Texas scored 56 points after halftime on 77.8 percent (21-of-27) shooting.
  • Two MVSU players scored in double figures led by senior Alvin Stredic's 11 points, while junior Greg Moore had 10 points off the bench.

SERIES HISTORY
  • This will be the first meeting between K-State and MVSU.
  • K-State is 19-1 all-time vs. members of the SWAC, all coming at home. This will be the first of two meetings with SWAC members, as UAPB will visit Bramlage Coliseum on Dec. 1.

LAST TIME OUT:
LSU 76, K-STATE 65
  • A 16-2 run midway the first half gave LSU all the momentum it would need, as the Tigers shot 50 percent from the field to hand K-State its first loss of the season with a 76-65 win on a doubleheader Thursday night before 9,507 fans at Bramlage Coliseum. It was the Wildcats' earliest home loss since dropping the season opener to Northern Colorado on Nov. 8, 2013.
  • In the return of former Wildcat Cam Carter, who led all scorers with 20 points, the Tigers (3-0) were stellar on both end of the court, dominating the glass 43-25 while holding the Wildcats (2-1) to just 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, including 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from 3-point range.
  • LSU entered the game allowing just 60.5 points per game, including the nation's best 3-point field goal percentage defense (11.8 percent; 4-of-24).
  • Senior David N'Guessan and junior Dug McDaniel led the Wildcats with 16 points each, while McDaniel added team-highs in assists (8) and steals (2). Senior Coleman Hawkins and junior Brendan Hausen each scored 8 points, as Hawkins eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier with a layup with 8:22 to play.
  • K-State got off to a fast start, jumping out to 7-2 lead behind 5 early points from N'Guessan. However, LSU quickly caught back up with 7 consecutive points to take its first lead at 9-7. The teams went back and forth over the next few minutes before the Tigers erupted for 23 of the next 28 points to jump ahead by 17 points (43-26) with 2 minutes left in the half.
  • The Wildcats got to within 10 points twice in the first few minutes of the second half before closing to 49-40 on a free throw by junior C.J. Jones and a layup by N'Guessan, but a 3-pointer from senior Jordan Sears ignited a 7-0 run that put the Tigers up 56-40 with 10:31 remaining.
  • The lead would not dip below 10 points the rest of the way.
  • K-State, which entered the game averaging 83.0 points on 50.8 percent shooting from the field, was held to season-lows in points, field goal percentage (37.7) and 3-point field goal percentage (23.8). The Wildcats connected on just 5 3-pointers after averaging 11.5 triples in the first 2 games.
  • N'Guessan scored his 16 points on 6-of-10 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and 3-of-6 free throws to go with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist, while
  • McDaniel made 7-of-15 field goals, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, with a game-high 5 assists and 2 steals.
  • In addition to shooting 50 percent from the field, LSU used its rebounding advantage to score 34 points in the paint and 16 second-chance points, while the bench outscored K-State, 32-15, with two double-digit scorers (freshman Vyctorius Miller and junior Daimion Collins).

POSTGAME NEWS & NOTES
  • The loss was the first of the season and just the second non-conference loss at home under head coach Jerome Tang.
  • K-State is now 183-57 in non-conference play since 2006-07, including 144-17 at home and 128-14 at Bramlage Coliseum.
  • K-State now leads the series, 2-1, as LSU wins its first matchup after losing games in 2022 and 2023.
  • K-State managed a season-low 7 turnovers, which were the fewest in a game since turning the ball over 5 times vs. Michigan State in 2023 NCAA Tournament.
  • Senior David N'Guessan and junior Dug McDaniel each scored in double figures with 16 points... N'Guessan is the only Wildcat to score in double figures in each of the first 3 games, while McDaniel earned his first as a Wildcat.

'CATS PICKED 8TH IN BIG 12 POLL; HAWKINS NAMED CO-NEWCOMER
  • K-State was picked eighth in the new 16-team Big 12 preseason poll, while senior transfer Coleman Hawkins was named the league's co-Newcomer of the Year, alongside Baylor's Jeremy Roach.
  • Hawkins is the first Wildcat to be selected as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and the fourth to be chosen for a preseason player honor, joining Michael Beasley (2007-08 Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year), Jacob Pullen (2010-11 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year) and Dean Wade (2018-19 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year).
  • Hawkins, who earned All-Big Ten honors at Illinois in 2023-24, was also selected to the preseason All-Big 12 Second Team by the league coaches, joining Baylor's Norchad Omier and Roach, Iowa State's Keshon Gilbert and Kansas' Dajuan Harris Jr.
  • Hawkins is also the first Wildcat to earn selection to one of the main preseason all-conference teams by the coaches since Barry Brown Jr. and Wade in 2018-19. Others include Pullen and Curtis Kelly in 2010-11, Rodney McGruder in 2012-13 and Marcus Foster in 2014-15.
  • K-State received 133 points to place eighth in the poll, just two points behind seventh-place Texas Tech and 17 points ahead of ninth-place BYU.
  • Kansas was picked first with 215 points and nine first-place votes followed closely by Houston (211, five first-place votes), third-place Iowa State (194, one first-place vote), fourth-place Baylor (185) and fifth-place Arizona (179, one first-place vote).
  • Hawkins has also been named to the watch list for the Naismith Trophy as well as the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.

SUCCESS IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
  • K-State has posted a 183-57 (.764) record in non-conference play since the 2006-07 season. • K-State's 12-1 non-conference mark in 2022-23 was the best since the 2009-10 team went a program-best 13-1. Last season, the team went 10-3 in non-conference play, including 7-1 at Bramlage Coliseum.
