K-State Sets School Scoring Mark in 120-73 win over UAPB

Dec 01, 2024 | Men's Basketball

Six Wildcats scored in double figures led by a season-high 21 points from senior Achor Achor.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Achor Achor led six Wildcats in double figures with a season-high 21 points, as Kansas State set the school single-game scoring record in a 120-73 win over UAPB on Sunday afternoon before 7,971 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

The 120 points eclipsed the previous mark of 116 set in a win over No. 6/6 Texas on Jan. 3, 2023, while they were the most-ever in a game at Bramlage Coliseum, surpassing the 115 scored against Delaware State on Dec. 7, 1991, and Fresno State on March 24, 1994. It was the 41st 100-point game in school history and the third under head coach Jerome Tang.

The Wildcats (6-2) put on a clinic from the 3-point line, totaling 21 makes on a school-record 40 attempts from beyond the arc, falling just two triples shy of the school record of 23 set against Fresno State in 1994. Eight different players registered at least one made 3-pointer, while seven had at least 2 makes, led by a season-high 5 from freshman David Castillo.

On top of the 63 points scored from the 3-point line, K-State scored 36 points in the paint and 32 points off turnovers while receiving a school-record 68 points from its bench.

The Wildcats connected on 61.5 percent (40-of-65) from the field, including 52.5 percent (21-of-40) from 3-point range, while they hit on 19 of 26 from the free throw line.  The team had assists on 30 of their 40 field goals made, including a career-high 10 from junior Dug McDaniel, who finished with his first career double-double with 18 points and 5 steals.

It marked the first time K-State has totaled 40 made field goals since a win over Missouri on Jan. 3, 1998, while it topped 30 assists for the first time since 2008. The 30 assists tied for the second-most in a game and were the most since the Wildcats set the school record with 34 in 1985.

Joining Achor, Castillo (17 points) and McDaniel in double figures were senior David N'Guessan (17 points), junior Brendan Hausen (14 points) and senior Max Jones (12 points).

K-State jumped out to an 8-0 lead less than 2 minutes into the game and led 17-3 after three consecutive 3-pointers before UAPB called a second timeout at the 16:03 mark. The lead topped 20 points for the first time after a 9-2 run at 39-18 then grew to 30 points at 54-24 after a 13-4 run that included two 3-pointers by Castillo.

The lead stood at its largest in the first half at 63-31 after consecutive baskets by N'Guessan and Max Jones right before halftime, as the 63 first-half points were the third-most in school history and the most since scoring 70 vs. Fresno State in 1994.

The Wildcats continued to its hot shooting in the second half, scoring 8 of the first 10 points to double up the Golden Lions at 71-35 at the 17:50 mark. The lead topped 40 points at 79-39 after a 3-pointer from Achor with more than 15 minutes remaining.

A 3-pointer from Hausen gave K-State its first 100-point game since 2023 with 5:23 left before a 3-pointer from sophomore Taj Manning set the school scoring record at 117 points with less than 2 minutes remaining. A 21st and final 3-pointer, this time by McDaniel, provided the final points at 120 with just over a minute remaining.

Achor collected his 13th career 20-point scoring game and his first as a Wildcat, as he connected on 7-of-10 field goals, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. McDaniel also went 7-of-10 from the field with 18 points to go with a career-high 10 assists and 5 steals. Castillo's 17 points came on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, while N'Guessan scored his 17 points on 7-of-8 field goals to go with 8 rebounds and 4 assists. It was N'Guessan's ninth straight double-digit scoring game.

Hausen registered double figures on just 4 field goal attempts, converting on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to go with 5-of-6 from the line for 14 points. Jones had a solid all-around game with 12 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

UAPB (1-8) finished at 47.1 percent (32-of-68) from the field, scoring 46 of its 73 points in the paint. Three Golden Lions scored in double figures, including a team-high 15 points from freshman Chop Paljor, who connected on 6-of-12 field goals, including 3-of-9 from 3-point range.

K-State plays its first true road game of the season on Saturday, Dec. 7, as the Wildcats visit St. John's (6-2) in the final Big 12/BIG EAST Challenge at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. The game will tip off at 10:30 a.m., CT on FOX.

HEAD COACH JEROME TANG
Opening statement…
"Couple things, one, first of all, I just want to thank God for this opportunity, man. To coach these guys and watch them just get a little bit better, a little bit better, you know. To stay the course and not try to be concerned about what other people are saying and how, at what rate we need to improve. I feel like our guys are doing a great job of growing together and getting a little bit better every single day. Second thing is, last night we lost [former St. John's head coach] Lou Carnesecca, and I didn't know him personally, but it's when I fell in love with basketball. Watching coach Carnesecca and [Georgetown head coach] coach [John] Thompson and [Syracuse head coach] coach [Jim] Boeheim, the Big East. Just all those games and the atmosphere and all those coaches had such great personalities, you know. And I still remember the sweaters, right, and then coach Thompson wearing the sweater, you know. Man, just a legend of our game, a guy who did a lot for the game of basketball, and the fact that we get to go up there [St John's] and play next week, man, I feel so honored. And praying for coach Carnesecca's family."

On what to take away from this game…
"Well, I felt like we asked the guys to play to a standard and that was our approach, I thought the guys took that approach. We wanted to be the team with the most energy and passion, and I thought we did that. And then, you know, we knew that we would get shots up. And some teams that played against them [UAPB] have, like, settled for threes and allowed them to hang around. And I told the guys in shootaround today that 'guys, we're gonna put up 35 threes and we're gonna make 15 of them, and the 20 that we miss, we're gonna get 10 of those offensive rebounds.' And they actually did better than I thought, you know, 21 of 40 and we got the 10 offensive rebounds, I felt like the guys executed what we wanted to execute."

On Achor Achor's progress on the court…
"Yeah, no, it was really good. And he's been doing better at practice and getting more comfortable. And, you know, I mean, all these guys, like, they are coming from someplace where they did things a certain way, and they had a certain comfort level and now it's different and maybe not what they expected or as they expected, or it's not coming as easy as they wanted. And, you know, there's a lot of doubt, and stuff goes in, right, not just on the players' side, on the coach's side and we all have to build this trust that they know they can play through some mistakes. That's on me as a coach, to help them feel more comfortable, so that they can be the best version of themselves, but him and Dug [McDaniel] and David Castillo, you know, just to see those guys as they're growing and they're learning and they're feeling more comfortable, that's the joy to see."

On freshman David Castillo's performance…
"David Castillo is going to be an all-conference guard, you know, he's a winner. This may be the first time in his life, other than injuries, that he's had to come off the bench or struggle, like things are not as easy for him, right. And he's always been able to slow the game down because of his maturity, and it's not the case right now, but he's continuing to work. I heard [Georgia football coach] Kirby Smart say that they asked their guys to work while you wait. And that's what I'm asking David to do, to continue working while you're waiting, because that's what's going to help you get better and I mean, you're an ankle turn away from, you know, consistently playing 25 minutes a night. And so that's something that's difficult to do, but he's mature enough to handle it."

On Coleman Hawkins only scoring two points in a night of record stats…
"I mean guys you know, [Hawkins] come off a career high at K-State, right last game [against Longwood], and then come into a game like this and see that his teammates are rolling and doesn't flinch and still delivers passes, 4 assists, 1 turnover, 3 steals, 4 rebounds and is not upset that he's not getting up shots. Like people want every guy to be Superman every night and tonight wasn't, he's like 'my teammates are rolling,' and he was actually calling the stuff that would allow him to be a facilitator rather than a scorer. And so, this is not an off night, this is Coleman doing what we needed to do to win, because he's a winner and he cares about winning and he loves his teammates."

FIRST HALF
K-State got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first 8 points capped by a 3-pointer from senior David N'Guessan, before UAPB called its first timeout at the 18:11 mark. Following a 3-pointer from the Golden Lions, a corner triple by senior Max Jones started a run of three consecutive 3-pointers that extended the lead to 17-3 and forced another timeout at the 16:03 mark.

The lead grew to 28-9 after 7 straight points by the Wildcats, which included a 3-pointer from freshman David Castillo. The Golden Lions cut the deficit to 30-16 with 5 straight points before the home team answered back with 9 of the next 11 points to take its first 20-point lead at 39-18.

K-State continued to build upon their lead, extending it 54-24 after a 13-4 run that included two more 3-pointers by Castillo. The lead stood at its largest at 63-31 after consecutive baskets by N'Guessan and Max Jones right before the halftime break.

The 63 first-half points were the third-most in school history and the most since scoring 70 vs. Fresno State in 1994. The Wildcats connected on 57.1 percent (20-of-35) from the field, including 50 percent (10-of-20) from 3-point range, while they made 13 of 15 free throw attempts.

Eight Wildcats scored in the opening half, including 11 points from junior Brendan Hausen and 10 points from senior Achor Achor.

SECOND HALF
K-State continued its scorching play to open the second half, scoring 8 of the first 10 points to push the lead to 71-35 at the 17:50 mark. The lead grew to 40 points at 79-39 after a 3-pointer from Achor just after the first media timeout with 15:29 left on the clock.

The Wildcats hit the 80-point plateau on a 3-pointer by McDaniel with 14:02 remaining then eclipsed 90 points on a layup by Achor at the 11:15 mark. A 3-pointer by Hausen gave the team their first 100-point game since 2023 with 5:23 left before a 3-pointer by sophomore Taj Manning set the school record at 117 points with less than 2 minutes remaining. McDaniel 3-pointer provided the final points at 120 with 1:03 left.

K-State scored its 57 second-half points on 66.7 percent (20-of-30) shooting, including 55 percent (11-of-20) from 3-point range. Two Wildcats scored in double figures, including 11 points from Achor and 10 from McDaniel.
