RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Kansas State junior women's golfer Carla Bernat fired a season-low round of 5-under par 67 on Sunday to lead the 58th-ranked Wildcats during the first day of the Puerto Rico Classic held at the par-72, 6,305-yard Grand Reserve Golf Club.
As a team, the Wildcats are in 11th place in a loaded field that features 11 teams in the top 60, including six in the top 25. K-State finished the first round with a 6-over par 294, and the Wildcats are one shot back of a tie for ninth place with third-ranked Arkansas and No. 50 Minnesota.
"We started off well today, but the rust showed up a little bit on the back nine," first-year head coach Stew Burke said. "Carla had a great round, shooting an effortless 67, and she showed great maturity by sticking to her game plan. Although the group is a little disappointed with their position on the leaderboard, we as coaches are proud of the effort they showed. We know that we have the ability to move up the leaderboard in the coming days. We are all looking forward to tomorrow and the better finish coming in."
Starting on hole No. 10, Bernat put together a bogey-free round with four birdies on the back 9 and one birdie on the front. Her score of 67 tied the lowest by a Wildcat this season – which was also accomplished by Haley Vargas during the Schooner Fall Classic – while it tied for the 10th-lowest round in school history.
Bernat bettered her previous season-low round of 68 that she carded during the first round of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational and the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, while it was two shots shy of her collegiate career-low round of 65 she had while playing at Tulane. The Castellon, Spain, native enters Monday's second round tied with Purdue's Momo Sugiyama for first place.
Freshman Alenka Navarro carded a 2-over par 74 and is tied for 46th place, while sophomore Noa van Beek is tied for 59th place at 4-over par 76. Vargas and freshman Julia Ballester Barrio are tied for 65th place following a first-round score of 5-over par 77.
No. 11 LSU is in first place at 5-under par 283, one shot ahead of 12th-ranked Texas A&M. No. 38 Oklahoma State is the only other team that shot under par on Sunday as the Cowgirls carded a 2-under par 286.
The second round of the Puerto Rico Classic tees off on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. AST (6:30 a.m. CST) shotgun start. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
