K-State Tied for Third After Round One
Mar 15, 2024 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. – Led by senior Napua Glossner's round of 1-under par 71, the Kansas State women's golf team battled rainy and windy conditions to card a first-round score of 1-over par 289 on Friday at the MountainView Collegiate held at the par-72, 6,345-yard Preserve Golf Club.
The Wildcats are tied with 17th-ranked Texas A&M, are three shots behind second-place Houston and seven shots shy of day-one leader South Florida.
"Today was a good day," head coach Stew Burke said. "The ladies stuck to the plan well, and they really hung in there when the weather turned. It was a total group effort right up to the end. I'm proud of the way we dealt with adversity, stuck to the plan and showed good mental toughness."
A native of San Diego, California, Glossner carded four birdies and three bogeys on the day as she recorded her second-straight round of under-par golf dating back to the final round of the Westbrook Invitational on February 26. Glossner is averaging 71.00 strokes over her last four rounds, and she enters Saturday's second round in a tie for ninth place.
Right behind Glossner and in a tie for 15th place are senior Haley Vargas and junior Carla Bernat at even-par 72. Vargas was 2-under par through her first eight holes before the conditions worsened, but she was able to battle over the back 9 for the even-par score. Bernat was bogey-free and 1-under par on the front 9 before bogeys on Nos. 11 and 14. However, the Castellon, Spain, native righted the ship with three pars and a birdie to close her round.
Sophomore Noa van Beek is tied for 29th place at 2-over par 74. She was at 5-over par after a bogey on No. 14, but the Oene, Netherlands, native birdied three of her final four holes to work her way back toward even par.
Senior Gabriela McNelly enters Tuesday's second round in a tie for 73rd place at 7-over par 79. Competing as an individual, freshman Julia Ballester Barrio is tied for 79th place at 10-over par 82.
South Florida's Melanie Green is atop the individual leaderboard with a round of 5-under par 67. Tennessee's Kayla Holden, Minnesota's Isabella McCauley and Iowa State's Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn are each one shot behind Green.
"It is really important that we keep five players in the round until the last hole tomorrow to give us the best chance to solidify and move up the leaderboard," Burke said. "Tomorrow's a new day, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can achieve."
Kansas State will start its second round of the MountainView Collegiate on Saturday morning with tee times off No. 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m. (PT). Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
