K-State Claims Second Conference Win, 6-1 Over Cincinnati

Wildcats are now 2-0 all-time against the Bearcats

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team claimed its second conference win of the season, 6-1 over Cincinnati on Thursday (March 28) at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
 
#75 K-State (8-9, 2-7 Big 12) started the match clinching the doubles point, the first doubles win since Iowa State on March 1, keeping the momentum over Cincinnati (7-9, 1-7 Big 12) heading into singles matches. The Wildcats are now 2-0 over the Bearcats.
 
Freshman Jillian Harkin and senior Manami Ukita won their first match together, 6-2 over Morgan Pyrz and Sakurako Watanabe in the no. 3 spot. Junior Veronika Kulhava and freshman Tereza Polakova clinched the doubles point, winning 6-3 in the no. 1 position over Rozalia Gruszczynska and Gabrielle Guenther.
 
Sophomore Maria Santos and Vanesa Suarez were up 5-4 over Victoire de Samucewicz and Callie Flanagan in the no. 2 spot.
 
The final point of the match came down to Santos in a third set tiebreaker against Isabel Pacheco in the no. 5 spot. She won the first set 7-5 but dropped the second in similar fashion. The tiebreaker went into double digits, Santos victorious 7-5, 5-7, 14-12. She previously won a three set tiebreaker early this season against Wichita State on Jan. 26.
 
Polakova started the Wildcats singles wins, sweeping Watanabe 6-1, 6-1 in the no. 5 spot.
 
Kulhava won after a high scoring second set over Guenther, successful in the no. 3 position 6-3, 7-5. This is her first singles win since facing the Cyclones.
 
Freshman Charlotte Keitel had a similarly scored match to Kulhava, defeating de Samucewicz 6-3, 7-5 in the no. 2 spot.
 
Freshman Maralgoo Chogsomjav also competed into three sets, battling back in the second against Flanagan after dropping the first set. Winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the no. 4 position, this is her second three set win of the season, her first on Feb. 9 against Alabama.
 
Suarez was defeated by Gruszczynska 7-5, 6-0 in the no. 1 position.
 
The time for K-State's match on Saturday (March 30) against West Virginia (13-6, 2-5 Big 12) has a new start time of 11 a.m. CT at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
