TRINITY, Texas – The Kansas State men's golf team put together a score of 12-over par 588 over the first two rounds of the 2024 Big 12 Championship on Monday held at the par-72, 7,434-yard Whispering Pines Golf Club.
The Wildcats carded a 5-over par 293 in the first round to reside in sixth place before a 7-over par 295 in the afternoon dropped them two spots. K-State is tied with Kansas and West Virginia, while it is a stroke behind seventh-place Texas Tech.
"I am proud of how the guys competed today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Playing 36 holes on a course this tough is a mental grind, and I thought we did a good job of staying focused and responding well to adversity. We still have a lot of golf left, so we need to rest up tonight and get after it again tomorrow."
Kansas State was led on Monday by junior Cooper Schultz, who is tied for ninth place at even-par 144. The Andover, Kansas, native recorded a 2-over par 74 in the morning before posting a 2-under par 70 in the second round. His afternoon 18 featured six birdies, including four-straight over Nos. 12-15, as he rose 20 spots on the individual leaderboard from his first-round position.
Another junior, JP Roller, is tied for 20th place at 2-over par 146, which included a round of even-par 72 in the morning. His first-round score was propped up by an eagle on the par-5 12th hole in addition to two birdies.
Nicklaus Mason is tied for 28th place with a two-round score of 3-over par 147. The junior put together a 1-under par 71 in the first round as he was bogey-free and 4-under par through 12 holes until his lone blemish of the round, a triple bogey on the par-4 13th hole.
Sophomore Alex Lindstrom enters Tuesday's third round tied for 48th place at 7-over par 151, while senior Luke O'Neill is in 64th place at 11-over par 155.
Big 12-newcomer BYU holds the 36-hole lead at 1-under par 575, one shot ahead of Texas. Peter Kim of BYU and Ty Gingerich of Cincinnati are tied atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under par 139.
Kansas State begins third-round play of the 72-hole Big 12 Championship on Tuesday with tee times off No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
