MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State's Carla Bernat was one of 12 collegiate women's golfers selected to compete for Team International in the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Tuesday during Golf Central on Golf Channel.
This is the second-straight year Bernat is a member of Team International for the Palmer Cup, which is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players. This year's event will take place at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland, July 5-7.
The 2024 edition of the Palmer Cup will have a true Wildcat feel as K-State head coach, Stew Burke, will serve as an assistant coach for Team International.
"I am delighted that Carla is going to be returning to the Arnold Palmer Cup and that the selection committee saw in her scores and ranking everything I get to see daily in practice," Burke said. "It will be fun to be involved in another environment with Carla as part of the team. She's a great teammate and will bring a lot of passion and fire to Team International as they try to win back the cup from the American side."
During her short time with the Wildcats, Bernat will be playing in a third world-renown amateur tournament after competing in the World Amateur Team Championship in October – helping Team Spain to a third-place finish – and the Augusta National Women's Amateur earlier this month – where she tied for 17th.
Ranked 23rd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), Bernat currently owns the K-State single-season scoring average record of 70.40 over her 25 rounds this season. A native of Castellon, Spain, she has placed in the top five in five of her nine stroke-play events, which includes victories at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in October and Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic last month.
The Big 12 Women's Golfer of the Month for March, Bernat is one of only three players in K-State history with multiple wins in a season, joining Boucher (three in 2003-04; two in 2002-03) and Jaffrey (two in 2017-18). Her two career victories with the Wildcats are tied for third in school history, while she is tied for sixth in top-five finishes (5).
Co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the GCAA, the Arnold Palmer Cup began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Florida, in 1997. The Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world's greatest courses, including The Old Course at St. Andrews, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course, and Cherry Hills. Beginning with the 2018 matches at Evian Resort Golf Club, the Palmer Cup is the only major tournament that features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
Since its inception, over 245 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on the PGA, DP World, or LPGA Tours; 44 have represented Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup, or Solheim Cup and more than 90 have claimed over 415 victories on the PGA, DP World, or LPGA Tours, including 2023 major champions Jon Rahm (Masters Tournament), Lilia Vu (The Chevron Championship & AIG Women's Open), Wyndham Clark (U.S. Open), Allisen Corpuz (U.S. Women's Open), and Brian Harman (The Open), as well as 2023 FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland. The United States leads the Palmer Cup series 14-12-1.
