K-State Crowns Two Hammer Throw Champions on Day 1

Kade McCall and Monique Hardy claim both the men's and women's hammer throw titles
WACO, Texas – The K-State track and field teams claimed both the men's and women's hammer throw events on the first day of the Big 12 Championship on Friday (May 9) with senior Kade McCall and junior Monique Hardy victorious at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.
The Wildcats started postseason competition with two champions and another podium finish in the field events.
McCall clinched the first event of the day, winning the men's hammer throw, for the first in K-State history, with his sixth and final throw at 69.83m/229-1. In the women's event, Hardy's first and winning throw went 64.24m/210-9, to secure the first hammer throw win for K-State women since 2019 when Helen Ingvaldsen won with a throw of 60.41m/198-2.
Three more Wildcats also competed in the hammer throw events, in the women's, senior Charlotte Cattermole-Williams finished 10th with a throw of 51.59m/169-3 while senior Jasmine Greer recorded a new personal best throw at 50.57m/165-11 in 12th place. In the men's event, senior Andrew White finished 11th with his season best of 57.36m/188-2.
Freshman Riley Marx landed on the podium with a 3rd place finish in the men's javelin at 68.04m/223-2, a new personal best and the highest for any freshman in the event. Senior Joe Placek placed 11th with a distance of 57.08m/187-3.
Senior Urte Bacianskaite competed in the first four events of the women's heptathlon, finishing the day in 4th place with 3,354 points, tied with the 3rd place competitor from Cincinnati, Juliette Laracuente-Huebner. Bacianskaite won the shot put with a throw of 14.60m/47-10.75 with her second highest finish in the 200 meter dash in 9th place in 25.32 seconds.
After a three hour weather delay, the track events began with the preliminary 1,500 meters. In the men's race, junior Alex Gutierrez ran a time of 3:51.55 for 26th place while senior Sydney Burton finished 17th in 4:32.89.
Two women competed in the preliminary 400 meter hurdles—sophomore Jourdin Edwards (8th; 59.28) and junior Ludivine Aubert (9th; 1:00.42) claiming the last two qualifying spots for the final race on Saturday.
To wrap up the night, freshman Josphine Wanjiku ran in the 10,000 meters for the first time, finishing 10th with a time of 35:45.77.
Due to the weather delay, the women's javelin throw was rescheduled to Saturday (May 10) at 9:15 a.m.
Continuing day two of competition, the last three heptathlon events will resume at 11:45 a.m. CT with the long jump. In the field events, the women's pole vault and long jump will both begin at 4 p.m., before track events start at 5 p.m. with the men's preliminary 110 meter hurdles.

I think they both knew that winning that was within reach of their capabilities and they just executed really, really well through the whole competition, very consistent throughout.
