
Track & Field Ready to Compete in Drake Relays for Consecutive Year

The Cats will compete in the university division on the track, some field events in the champion division
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State track and field teams continue the outdoor season with a consecutive weekend of competition on Thursday-Saturday (April 23-25) in the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, at Drake Stadium. Tickets can be purchased online with the first single session available on Thursday afternoon starting at $18.
The Wildcats will be competing in the university division with some Cats selected for the championship in field events. Thursday at 4:30 p.m., the college/university division distance events start on the track.
In the USTFCCCA week 4 rankings from April 21, the men's team is #15 in the nation with 141.23 points, the women's team sits at #48. In the EventSquad rankings, the women's team is #1 in the triple jump and #4 in the 400-meter hurdles while the men's team is #2 in the long jump.
Last weekend, the Cats competed in the Oregon Team Invitational on April 17-18 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. In a unique team scored meet against six other teams, the men's team won with 217 points, the women's team finished runner-up with 288.5 points.
On the first day of the meet, junior Tah Chikomba, a native of Zimbabwe, broke the school record in the men's long jump at 8.25m (27' 1"), the current NCAA lead, #9 in the World and the #2 best jump in Zimbabwe's history. The previous record was 8.21m (26' 11.5") by Kenny Harrison in 1988, who went on to win a gold medal in the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, Ga.
During the two days of competition, multiple athletes recorded marks placing them in the K-State all-time top-10 records. In the triple jump, sophomore Selva Prabhu improved on his no. 3 mark in the outdoor records at 16.61m (54' 6") while senior Apalos Edwards was right behind him at 16.53m (54' 2.75"), now the no. 4 mark.
On the track, the men's 4x100 team finished 3rd in 39.68 seconds, with freshmen Jack Guthridge and Croix DaCunha and junior Nen Matlock and Chikomba, for the no. 3 fastest time in K-State history. Senior Vanessa Mercera won the 400-meter hurdles in 56.62 seconds, now the no. 4 fastest time in the women's records.
After the Relays, the team will wrap up the outdoor regular season hosting the Ward Haylett Invitational on Friday, May 8.
