Schultz Rises on Day Two of NCAA Regional

AUSTIN, Texas – Kansas State junior men's golfer Cooper Schultz made a 24-spot improvement from his first-round placing by turning in a score of 2-under par 69 on Tuesday during the second round of the 2024 NCAA Austin Regional held at the par-71, 7,399-yard UT Golf Club.
A native of Andover, Kansas, Schultz made the fourth-biggest rise on the leaderboard during the second round as he enters Wednesday's final round tied for 25th place at 1-over par 143 for the regional.
Schultz began his day with a birdie on the par-4 1st hole and a bogey on No. 2, but he proceeded to go bogey free and 3-under par over his next 15 holes until a bogey on the par-4 18th. After tallying six-straight pars from Nos. 3 through 8, Schultz birdied the par-5 9th hole, par-3 12th hole and par-5 14th hole.
"Cooper was very solid today, especially tee to green," head coach Grant Robbins said of Schultz, who carded his team-leading 18th under-par round this season. "He drove the ball extremely well and gave himself quite a few birdie looks throughout the round. If he can get hot with the putter, he has a chance to put up a low number tomorrow. He just needs to stay patient, stick to his game plan and convert those opportunities when he can."
To qualify for the NCAA Championship, which is held May 24-27 at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California, Schultz will need to be the lowest individual on a non-advancing team. That distinction is currently held by Wake Forest's Michael Brennan, who leads on the individual leaderboard at 7-under par 135. However, Wake Forest is only two shots shy of the cutline for advancing as a team, and the next competitor in line to advance as an individual is at 4-under par.
Homestanding Texas holds a 10-shot lead on the team leaderboard at 22-under par 546. The other four teams that are currently in line to advance to the NCAA Championship from the Austin Regional are Tennessee, Notre Dame, BYU and Utah.
Schultz will tee off his final round of the 2024 NCAA Austin Regional on Wednesday at 9:53 a.m. Live Results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
