KU Evens Series with Saturday Win

May 04, 2024 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas' pitching staff turned in the team's first shutout of the season, as the Jayhawks evened up the Dillions Sunflower Showdown with K-State after a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
.
"I thought Kansas' pitching was good today," K-State head baseball coach said. "Dominic Voegele had a pretty mature outing for a freshman. I thought we had a decent outing from Jackson Wentworth, and he ran into bad luck. The game came down to getting a hit with runners on base. Kansas was able to do that, and we were not, that was the difference in the game."

Voegele logged six scoreless innings for KU, as the freshman limited the Wildcats to four hits with five strikeouts and a walk to pick up his seventh victory of the season (7-2) while Hunter Cranton was credited with the save.

Wentworth received the loss, allowing two runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings of work. The redshirt-sophomore finished the game with seven strikeouts and three walks (3-3).

Four different Wildcats generated a hit led by two-hit days from Brendan Jones and Brady Day.

With the victory, the Jayhawks ended the Wildcats seven-game winning streak in the all-time series.

THE RUNDOWN
KU threatened to jump on the board in the second frame after loading the bases with one out. The batter laid down the squeeze bunt down the third base line but Jaden Parsons quickly glove flipped the ball to catcher Raphael Pelletier to lay down the tag and get the out. With two outs and the bases jammed, Wentworth punched out the final batter in six pitchers to end the inning.

After four scoreless innings, the Jayhawks scored four runs in a three-inning span highlighted by a two-out, two-run double off the right field wall by designated hitter Lenny Ashby in the fifth.

K-State had opportunities in the sixth and seventh, as the Cats landed runners on first and second with one out in each inning, but the Jayhawks recorded consecutive outs to preserve the shutout.
