Bernat in Good Position at NCAA Regional

BRYAN, Texas – Kansas State junior women's golfer Carla Bernat tied the school record for lowest round by a Wildcat in NCAA postseason play with a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday, as she remains in sixth place at the 2024 NCAA Bryan Regional held at the par-72, 6,376-yard Traditions Golf Club.
Bernat, who holds a 36-hole score of 4-under par 140, tied the school's postseason record held by Miranda Smith, who originally set the mark during the second round of the 2003 NCAA Central Regional in Lincoln, Nebraska.
"Carla played well today," head coach Stew Burke said. "She did a really good job of reacting well once when she made a mistake, which kept the big number off her scorecard. It was also nice to see some putts go in on the back nine."
After beginning her second-straight round with a bogey on No. 1, Bernat bounced back with pars on the next four holes before birding three of her final four holes of the front 9 – the par-4 6th, par-3 7th and par-4 9th.
Bernat alternated birdies and bogeys on the first four holes of her second 9, but she became more consistent down the stretch as she went bogey free over the final five holes with a birdie on No. 16.
With the final round upcoming on Wednesday, the top five teams and the top individual on a non-advancing team will move on to the 2024 NCAA Championship, held next week in Carlsbad, California. Bernat is currently one shot behind Vanderbilt's Virginie Ding, who would be the individual to advance if both the team and individual results stayed the same, as the Commodores are on the wrong side of the cutline by two shots. Another player in the hunt to advance as an individual is Sam Houston's Viera Permata Rosada, who rose 39 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for seventh place and is two shots back of Bernat.
"Carla is playing well and just needs to keep the momentum going into tomorrow's round by sticking to her game plan and staying patient," Burke said. "If she does that, she should be in a good position in terms of advancing."
SMU holds the team lead through 36 holes at 6-under par 570, followed by Clemson, Texas A&M, LSU and Ohio State to round out the top five. LSU's Ingrid Lindblad, who sits atop both the NCAA rankings and World Amateur Golf Rankings, leads on the individual leaderboard at 8-under par 136.
Bernat will tee off her final round of the 2024 NCAA Bryan Regional on Wednesday at 9:40 a.m., as she begins on hole No. 1. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
