Cats Lead Through Two Rounds of Powercat Invitational
Sep 09, 2024 | Women's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fueled by a pair of under-par rounds from both senior Carla Bernat and freshman Nanami Nakashima, the Kansas State women's golf team holds a 10-shot lead through 36 holes of the Powercat Invitational on Monday held at the par-72, 6,439-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.
The Wildcats are at 5-over par 581, 10 shots ahead of second-place North Texas and 18 shots clear of third-place Jacksonville State. K-State shot even-par 288 in the morning before strong afternoon winds made conditions difficult on all 16 teams, as the Wildcats turned in a second-round score of 5-over par 293.
"Today was a little bit of everything – the good, the bad, and the ugly," head coach Stew Burke said. "However, I am really proud of the ladies. They competed and showed some good stuff even though it's early in the year. There is nothing better than getting to see your roster play in tournament conditions, and as a coach it gives you the opportunity to know what we need to work on in the coming weeks. We have 18 more holes tomorrow where we would like to eliminate some of the mistakes we made and push for a strong finish."
Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Nakashima, a native of Kani, Japan, is in first place at 4-under par 140. The freshman came out on fire in the morning round with a 3-under par 69 thanks to six birdies that offset a bogey and double-bogey. Her afternoon round featured an eagle on No. 12 as part of a 1-under par 71 effort.
Bernat, a Preseason All-American, picked up right where she left off as she went 2-under par 70 in the first round and 1-under par 71 in the afternoon to reside in second place. After carding seven birdies on the day, Bernat is in search of her third individual victory as a Wildcat.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Julia Ballester Barrio is tied for fourth place at 2-over par 146 following a pair of 1-over par rounds. Her morning 18 featured seven birdies, including five straight over holes 13 through 17.
Another sophomore, Alenka Navarro, is tied for 10th place at 5-over par 149 as she is in search of the second top-10 finish of her career.
Senior transfer Sophie Bert, who came to K-State from East Tennessee State, enters Tuesday's final round tied for 19th place at 7-over par 151. She is two shots ahead of a pair of Wildcats in junior Noa van Beek and freshman Natalia Fiel Ros, the latter competing as an individual. van Beek and Field Ros are tied for 25th place entering the final 18 holes.
The final round of the Powercat Invitational will tee off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Live scoring can be followed at Scoreboard.Clippd.com/Results.
