Wildcats Set School Record During Final Round
Sep 23, 2024 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – The Kansas State women's golf produced a final-round score of 11-under par 269 on Monday, setting the program record for lowest team round and climbing seven spots to finish in sixth place at the Schooner Fall Classic, held at the par-70, 6,188-yard Belmar Golf Club.
Â
All four counting scores for the Wildcats on Monday were in the 60s, and each of those four players rose at least 20 spots on the individual leaderboard in what turned out to be the final round of the weather-shortened 36-hole event.
Â
K-State began second-round play on Sunday by moving from 13th place to ninth place. However, once storms entered the Norman area by mid-morning, tournament officials declared a cancellation of the round, reduced the tournament to 36 holes and restarted the second and final round on Monday.
Â
The unfortunate set of circumstances fueled the Wildcats during the final round as they shaved 23 shots off their first-round performance to finish with a 36-hole score of 1-over par 561.
Â
"I am really proud of the ladies' resilience today," head coach Stew Burke said. "We are obviously disappointed that round two was canceled even though every team was on the golf course, and we felt we should have continued where we left off. However, the fresh start was an opportunity to climb the leaderboard again. It was a total team effort today. If I told you we were disappointed with a poor first round, it would be an understatement because we knew our game plan was good and the players just needed to come out and play golf the K-State way. I'm excited to get back on the road again with this team next week at The Blessings."
Â
K-State was led during the two-round tournament by senior Sophie Bert, who tied for eighth place at 3-under par 137. The transfer from East Tennessee State climbed 20 spots on the individual leaderboard on Monday by recording a career-low round of 4-under par 66, which was tied for the fourth-lowest round in school history. A native of Deurle, Belgium, Bert carded six birdies on the day to offset a pair of bogeys, while she went unblemished with three birdies on the back 9.
Â
The trio of senior Carla Bernat, sophomore Alenka Navarro and junior Noa van Beek each rose 31 spots on the leaderboard during the final round. Bernat, who tied for 19th place, went bogey free during her round of 3-under par 67 as she finished with a 36-hole score of even-par 140. Navarro and van Beek each tallied four birdies on Monday en route to a score of 2-under par 68 to tie for 42nd place at 4-over par 144.
Â
Freshman Nanami Nakashima was one shot back of Navarro and van Beek as she tied for 49th place with a 36-hole score of 5-over par 145.
Â
Houston overtook No. 6 Auburn during the final round to win the event at 9-under par 551, two shots ahead of the Tigers. Florida State's Mirabel Ting rose three spots on the leaderboard to take the individual title at 6-under par 134, one shot clear of a three-way tie for second place.
Â
Kansas State is back in action next Monday through Wednesday at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational held at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
