Wildcats Suffer Straight-Set Loss Friday Night

PROVO, Utah – No. 17 BYU had three players register double-digit kills Friday night, as the Cougars dealt K-State a straight-set loss at Smith Fieldhouse, 16-25, 18-25, 9-25.

Suli Davis, the Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year led all players with 12 kills while Claire Little-Chambers had 11 and Sophia Callahan added 10.

BYU (18-5, 6-5 Big 12), which has not lost back-to-back home matches since 2011, held K-State to a season-low .033 hitting percentage. The Cougars defense forced 22 errors and held a 38-31 edge in dig production with a 9.0-4.0 lead in blocks.

The Wildcats (12-7, 5-6 Big 12) were led by senior Shaylee Myers with 10 kills. Symone Sims led all players with nine digs, while Ava LeGrand dished out 21 assists.

"Disappointing loss tonight to a very good and physical BYU team. Not having Aniya [Clinton] was obviously tough but that's not how we've been competing. It's been a long three weeks on the road and we've improved in many ways, but we need to find a way to learn from this and move on."

Set 1 – #17 BYU 25, K-State 16
  • BYU scored three consecutive points to start off a 7-1 opening run, highlighted by aces from Davis and Hannah Billeter and forced a timeout from the Wildcats.
  • With a kill from Fox and ace by Symone Sims, K-State brought the score within five, 9-4, but was immediately answered with an 8-2 run by the Cougars.
  • Suli produced a set-leading six kills followed by Claire Little-Chambers with four.
  • K-State was limited to a .080 (7 kills, 5 errors) hitting percentage, while the Cougars had a team .407 (14 kills, 3 errors) efficiency.

  • K-State attacked early with a 5-2 lead – its largest of the match – until BYU added six straight points to the board to jump ahead.
  • Trailing 24-14, the Wildcats fended off set-point four times before a kill from Little-Chambers sent the match into intermission.
  • BYU had 15 kills with four errors and hit a .324 clip in Set 2, with six kills from Little-Chambers.

  • After back-and-forth action, BYU used a 10-2 scoring run to put the match away. Ā 
  • K-State hit -.065 in the set with seven kills and nine errors, that included four kills from Myers, while the Cougars' defense recorded five blocks in the final set.

  • BYU defeated the Wildcats in straight sets – 25-16, 25-18, 25-9 – Friday night.
  • K-State hit at a season-low .033 clip, while BYU hit at .372 team hitting percentage.
  • Myers had a team-best 10 kills followed by Reagan Fox with four.
  • BYU had nine team blocks while K-State had four.
  • Symone registered nine digs, while LeGrand dished out 21 assists with six digs.
  • BYU out-served K-State, 7-2, with three Cougars recording multiple service aces.Ā 
BEYOND THE BOX
  • BYU leads the all-time series 5-3, that includes a 3-1 lead in matches played in Provo.
  • Freshman Lauren Latham made her first collegiate start – third appearance of the season. Avery Stones, whose mother played volleyball at BYU, recorded her first collegiate kill in Set 2.
  • K-State is 6-3 in three-set matches in 2025, suffering its first straight set loss since September 28 vs. Arizona State.

The Wildcats return to Manhattan for a pair of Big 12 home matches at Morgan Family Arena, starting November 6 against Cincinnati (11-8, 3-6 Big 12) at 6:30 p.m. K-State will take on No. 23 Colorado (19-3, 9-1 Big 12) at 1 p.m. on November 8.
