BSB Lincoln Sheffield CCU 2025

Four-Run Sixth Hurts K-State in 9-2 Loss

Feb 17, 2025 | Baseball

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina used a four-run sixth inning and 14 hits to deal the Wildcats a 9-2 loss on Monday at Springs Brooks Stadium, in the final game of Baseball at the Beach.

Behind 10 strikeouts from the Chants' (4-0) pitching staff, CCU limited K-State to two runs with reliever Luke Jones picking up his first win of the season. The right-hander logged 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Jacob Morrison, who allowed just two hits with six strikeouts in his four innings of work.

"Obviously, we have a lot of work to do, but we saw some bright spots," commented head coach Pete Hughes. "I thought Lincoln Sheffield pitched well and competed. He didn't beat himself, and that's all we ask of our guys. Anytime you don't walk anyone, you give yourself a chance."

A native of Flowood, Mississippi, Sheffield (0-1) punched out a team-season-high six batters in his K-State debut, including striking out the side in the fifth. The left-hander received the loss and scattered 10 hits but held the Chants to three earned runs without allowing a walk over five complete innings.

Sheffield's five innings of work is the longest outing by a K-State pitcher this season.

"That was a really tight game in the sixth inning. We had our chance to make it a 3-2 game, and that's where we need to grow. We have to improve in the middle of the game and build on a good start, which we got from Lincoln," Hughes said.

"It's early. A lot of guys got in and played, and showed some good things. I was especially happy with left-handed pitcher Micah Henson, who came into a really tough, bases-loaded situation and showed great composure. On to tomorrow."
Henson, a true freshman out of Raymore, Missouri, recorded two shutout innings in his collegiate debut, striking out three of the five batters he faced.

Six different Wildcats (1-3) registered a hit in the loss, with junior Maximus Martin driving in the lone RBI in the eighth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless opening frame, CCU added two runs to the board with an RBI single and sacrifice fly to shallow right field.

Down 2-0, Sheffield punched out two batters and retired the side in the fourth to keep the game within two.

K-State picked up momentum in the fifth as the Chants issued back-to-back walks to David Bishop and Kyan Lodice, but a failed double steal attempt and grounder to second handed CCU a quick two outs.

Sheffield continued to deal in the fifth, striking out the side to hold CCU to one run in the inning.

Nick English drew a walk and advanced to third on a single from pinch hitter Micah Dean – the first collegiate hit for the redshirt freshman. The Wildcats ended the drought in the next at bat after taking advantage of a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 ball game.

CCU got the run back that was handed over in the top of the inning and exploded for four runs in the sixth to take control of the game, led by a solo shot to left center by Ty Barrango.

The Cats attempted to capitalize on a pair of free bases and single by Dee Kennedy, but reliever Ryan Lynch recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

After a scoreless seventh, K-State added its final run with an RBI double from Martin.
