Wildcats begin conference play at home on February 28

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team wrapped up the non-conference schedule on Sunday (Feb. 23) down 4-1 to Rice at Body First Tennis Center.

K-State (3-4) narrowly lost the doubles point to the #48 Owls (6-4) with a back-and-forth battle on two courts, unable to continue the momentum from the ranked win on February 22 over #51 Iowa.

With the one doubles win for the Wildcats, senior Veronika Kulhava and junior Maria Santos came back from a deficit to defeat Divna Ratkovic and Nithesa Selvaraj 6-4, now 2-2 together in the no. 3 spot.

Sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel fought against #33 ranked Fernanda Martinez and Darya Schwartzman in the no. 1 position, but could not secure the win at 4-6. Junior Sana Garkani and sophomore Tereza Polakova fell 1-6 in the no. 2 spot to Francesca Maguina and Saara Orav.

Chogsomjav was the only victorious Cat in singles play, winning in straight sets. After a high scoring first set against Selvaraj in the no. 3 position, she swept her in the second, winning 7-5, 6-2.

Keitel battled into another three sets in a consecutive match in the no. 1 spot. Facing Schwartzman, she went scoreless in the first set before claiming the second in a high scoring 7-5. Keitel was then unable to string together a series of points to fall 0-6, 7-5, 4-6.

Santos lost a consecutive match in the no. 2 position, 0-6, 3-6, to Ratkovic. Garakani found herself leading in her second set against Martinez but was unsuccessful in the no. 5 spot 4-6, 3-6.

Before match stoppage, Polakova was headed into a third set with Maguina in the no. 4 position. She claimed the first at 6-3 before faltering in a high scoring second set at 6-3, 5-7. Kulhava had just begun her face off with Orav at 1-3 in the no. 6 spot.

K-State opens Big 12 play at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium on Friday, February 28, at 4 p.m., against #20 UCF (8-1) and Sunday, March 2, at 12 p.m., against Houston (3-3).
