K-State’s 1v4+ Named First Big 12 Boat of the Week of 2025 Season

The Wildcats last earned the honor in May 2023

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State 1v4+ was named the first Big 12 Boat of the Week for the 2025 season on Wednesday (March 19) after three dominate performances at the Hornet Invitational on March 15-16 in Sacramento, Calif.

"We're proud of this boat and the team really for the work they have done so far this year," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "It's great to see our athletes get recognition for the work they do. Each of the athletes in this boat show up every day, ready to work, and do everything they can to push our program forward.

"A lot of our team's strongest leadership is in this lineup. Each of them is a good representation of our program and what we aim to accomplish each year."

The boat consisted of junior coxswain Kiersten Schmalz, seniors Rachel Harman and Madison Koller and juniors Grace Hall and Sylvia Cunningham. This is the first weekly award for K-State since May 2023.

The Cats in the 1v4+ had an undefeated weekend competing on Lake Natoma. In their first race of the weekend, the crew won by a margin of 13 seconds in 7:34.1, competing against Sac State and Cal Poly Humboldt.

Building on that momentum, the 1v4+ recorded another first-place finish in 8:01.2 against Saint Mary's. Wrapping up the weekend with another dominant performance, the Wildcats came in first place by a margin of more than 10 seconds in 7:35.4 against UC San Diego.

"On our team we acknowledge that one boat getting recognition, winning a race, or getting a medal, is like the whole team winning," Sweeney said. "With the way that we recruit and train, you don't get anywhere without the people around you. The people who push you and teammates who motivate you to be better. Our program is built off hard work and people who want to see what they can accomplish.

"We're proud of the four for a strong start to the year. It's still early in the season, and we're looking forward to building more speed and seeing what the rest of the season holds."
