K-State Tied for Fourth After Round One

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Kansas State women's golf team was one of six teams to card a first-round score of 2-over par 290 on Sunday as the Wildcats are in a logjam of a tie for fourth place following the first day of the MountainView Collegiate held at the par-72, 6,345-yard Preserve Golf Club.
The 30th-ranked Wildcats received a pair of under-par rounds to begin the event they co-host with Missouri as senior Carla Bernat turned in a 2-under par 70 and freshman Nanami Nakashima tallied a 1-under par 71. The duo produced two of the 20 under-par scores among the 77-player field during the opening round.
"Today was frustrating as we could not take advantage of our ball striking. However, we did a good job of not letting the round slip away as we are still right in the tournament," said head coach Stew Burke, whose squad leads the 14-team field with 66 total pars. "We have an early start tomorrow, so we will look to take advantage of the colder and less windy conditions."
Bernat, a native of Castellon, Spain, who now has a team-leading 14 under-par rounds this season, went 1-under par with two birdies on the front 9 before a bogey-free 1-under par second 9. She is one of five players who led the field on Sunday by going a collective 2-under par on the par 3s. She enters Monday's second round two shots off the lead and in a nine-way tie for sixth place.
Nakashima's day was highlighted by a slam dunk eagle from 143 yards out on the par-4 12th hole. The Kani, Japan, product, who collected her eighth round under par this season, is tied for 15th place.
Senior Sophie Bert is tied for 36th place at 2-over par 74, one shot ahead of junior Noa van Beek and sophomore Julia Ballester Barrio, who are tied for 49th place. Playing as an individual and starting on hole No. 10, Ballester Barrio went 1-under par during her second 9 thanks to an eagle on the par-5 3rd hole. Another sophomore, Alenka Navarro is tied for 58th place at 4-over par 76.
No. 34 Oklahoma holds a 1-shot lead over 13th-ranked TCU at 6-under par 282. The Sooners also have the top individual in Audrey Rischer at 4-under par 68, one shot ahead of a four-way tie for second place.
Kansas State begins the second round of the MountainView Collegiate on Monday morning with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. (MST) as the Wildcats are paired with Nebraska and Wichita State. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
