TUCSON, Ariz. – Following the second-best score among the 14-team field during Monday's second round, the Kansas State women's golf team is in second place and one shot back of the lead in the MountainView Collegiate held at the par-72, 6,345-yard Preserve Golf Club.
No. 30 K-State, which holds a 36-hole score of 9-over par 585, battled through a cold and windy day to turn in a round of 7-over par 295. The Wildcats are one shot back of No. 18 Arizona and one shot ahead of No. 13 TCU entering the final round, while No 34 Oklahoma is four shots behind the Horned Frogs.
Senior Carla Bernat, who holds a four-shot lead on the individual leaderboard, and junior Noa van Beek were two of only three competitors in the 77-player field to go even or under par on Monday. Bernat turned in the round of the day at 4-under par 68, while van Beek shot even par.
"Today was a really tough day. It was very cold in the morning, and we had strong winds throughout the round," head coach Stew Burke said. "We really didn't get off to a great start, but the ladies stuck with it and did a good job of posting a decent score. Carla's and Noa's rounds really helped us move up the leaderboard today. For Carla to shoot under par and separate herself from the field was huge, especially given how tough the course played. Ultimately, we need to clean up the unforced errors in tomorrow's final round to put ourselves in the best position to move up one more spot."
Bernat, the only player in the field to shoot under par each of the first two rounds, holds a 36-hole score of 6-under par 138 as she is one of only four players to enter the final round under par. A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat tallied five birdies on the day, which included a bogey-free and 3-under par back 9. Bernat, who is tied for first with eight total birdies over the first 36 holes, now has nine rounds in the 60s this season.
A product of Oene, Netherlands, van Beek flew 41 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for eighth place on Monday thanks to her round that matched five bogeys with five birdies. She enters Tuesday's final round at 3-over par 147.
Playing as an individual, Julia Ballester Barrio was another big riser on Monday by improving 35 spots into a tie for 14th place at 4-over par 148. Starting on No. 10, the Castellon, Spain, native closed out her round by going 1-under par on the front 9.
Freshman Nanami Nakashima is tied for 24th place at 6-over par 150, two shots ahead of sophomore Alenka Navarro, who is tied for 37th place. With a round of 4-over par 76, Navarro improved 21 spots up the leaderboard during the second round. Senior Sophie Bert is tied for 52nd place at 11-over par 155.
A shotgun start to the final 18 holes of the MountainView Collegiate begins at 8:15 a.m. (MST) on Tuesday as the Wildcats are paired with Arizona and TCU. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
