Tennis Prepares for First Road Weekend in Big 12 Play

Wildcats will play at Cincinnati for the first time on Friday
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team hits the road for the first two Big 12 conference road matches at Cincinnati on Friday (March 7) and at West Virginia on Sunday (March 9).

The Wildcats (4-5, 1-1 Big 12) will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, for the first time to face the Bearcats (6-3, 0-2 Big 12) at 12 p.m. CT, at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center. In the third match up in series history, K-State is 2-0 in matches played in Manhattan, defeating Cincinnati for the first time in conference play last year with a 6-1 victory. The two teams met for the first time back in 2019, the Cats earning a 4-0 win.

Traveling to Morgantown, W.V., K-State will face the Mountaineers (6-7, 0-2 Big 12) at 10 a.m. CT, at the Summit Tennis Academy. Leading the series 8-1, the Wildcats were victorious 4-3 last season at home, the lone loss in 2023 when the team played at WVU.

Starting off conference play last weekend at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium, the Cats went 1-1 against #44 UCF and Houston. K-State fell 1-4 to the Knights on February 28 before bouncing back with a 4-0 shutout of Houston on March 1.

Against the Cougars, freshman Zhanel Rustemova competed in just her second match of the season, successful both in doubles and singles matches. She started the Cats' success in singles matches, winning her first singles match this spring with a sweep of Iva Sepa, 6-4, 6-3. With junior Sana Garakani, the pair clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 final over Heta Nuutinen and Sepa.

Sophomore Tereza Polakova earned the winning point with a tiebreaker second set. Facing Sophie Schouten, she quickly won the first set before coming back from behind in the second for the clinching point at 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
