Marx Enters Record Books at No. 3 to Start Outdoor Season

Wildcats start the outdoor season with multiple top marks

WICHITA, Kan. – The K-State track and field teams started the outdoor season by recording six top-three performances on Friday (April 11) at the first day of the KT Woodman Classic at Cessna Stadium.
 
Sophomore Riley Marx won the men's javelin throw while jumping up in the K-State school records with sophomore Vienna Lahner and junior Gary Moore Jr. also earning 1st place finishes in their respective events.
 
Marx recorded his best javelin distance by almost 10 feet with a throw of 70.83m (232' 4"), now no. 3 in the men's records. His winning mark was 15 feet further than the runner up.
 
Lahner crossed the finish line first in the women's 1,500 meters with a time of 4:27.41. Moore Jr. had a winning distance in the shot put at 17.70m (58' 1"), over two feet further than the second place finisher. Junior Nate Collier also competed in the shot put for 3rd place at 16.47m (54' 0 ½").
 
Seniors Tommy Hazen and Jessi Brummett both finished runners-up. Just three seconds behind the winner, Hazen competed in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:09.46. Brummett threw for the second-best distance in the women's javelin throw at 44.57m (146' 2").
 
There was other top-10 marks from the Cats both on the track and in the field events. Both with 6th place finishes was junior Saydee Tanking in women's javelin (42.17m, 138' 4") and junior Grace Meyer (4:34.53) in the women's 1,500 meters.
 
Freshman Jackson Esquibel ran in his first track meet as a Wildcat, finishing 7th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:53.27. Fellow freshman Jack Steger ran in the 800 meters in 9th place in 1:52.43.
 
Senior Alex Gutierrez ran in both 1,500 (10th; 3:54.33) and 800 meters (13th; 1:52.87) to start his last collegiate season.
 
The second day of events begins on Saturday (April 12) at 11 a.m. with five field events. Ticket prices begin at $5 with the meet being streamed on ESPN+.
