MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State has earned a second Big 12 Boat of the Week honor of the 2025 season, announced by the conference on Wednesday (April 16), after a strong performance by the 3v8+ against Creighton on April 13 in Omaha, Neb.
Â
"We're proud of our team for the work they have done this season. This boat specifically, has made a lot of progress as they have learned to row and compete at this level," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "Our recruiting model has continued to work. Each year we look for tall, competitive, out of sport athletes that are open to the opportunity of learning something new.
Â
"Our team has been shaped by athletes that come here and they want to work. They want to see what they can accomplish at this level. Recruiting this way has its challenges, but seeing our athletes learn and grow throughout their time at K-State is why we do what we do."
Â
A true novice boat, the crew was made up of 6 true freshmen and 2 redshirt freshmen. The lineup consisted of coxswain Mia Starnes, Karlee Horyna, Abby Huonder, Kendall Lane, Delaney Goshorn, Abby Farr, Katelyn Colwell, Annika Janss and Lacy Miller.
Â
Each athlete came to K-State with no prior rowing experience and have taken on the challenge of being built into competitive DI rowers.
Â
The Wildcat's 3v8+ opened competition this past weekend with a statement win, beating the Bluejays' 3v8+ and 4v8+ by a margin of nearly 30 seconds, with a final time of 7:22.6. Across all boats, the Cats won four races at the Duel.
Â
The 3v8+ also put on a dominant performance versus fellow Big 12 competitor Tulsa earlier this season when the team competed in Oklahoma City at the UCO Invitational. K-State recorded five first place finishes across all boats throughout the weekend.
Â
The Cats' 1v4+ earned the first Boat of the Week accolade of the season on March 19 after three dominant wins in the Hornet Invitational over Sacramento State, Humboldt, Saint Mary's and UCSD.
Â
"We're starting to find more speed and see what we are capable of as a team. Our athletes have worked hard, and we always appreciate when they get recognition for that work," Sweeney said. "There is still a lot of season left and we're looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish next."
